You might find an interesting bit on condemned prisoners last meals in a book called "Compelled, All About Justice" by Wes Lloyd on Amazon.com or B&N.com. This guy has the answer to fixing crime in the US and I think you all would love it!

Why the hell should people that are about to be executed get ANY last meals? Did their VICTIMS get a last meal?

In pre-modern Europe, granting the condemned a last meal has roots in superstition: a meal was a highly symbolic social act. Accepting freely offered food symbolized making peace with the host. The guest agreed tacitly to take an oath of truce and symbolically abjured all vengeance. Consequentially, in accepting the last meal the condemned was believed to forgive the executioner, the judge, and witnesses.
Lifted from Wiki but you get the picture.

Wow! I missed that execution. Guess things are going well for the new protocol.
I just cannot imagine wolfing down the insane amount of food that most prisoners manage, honestly. That Mark Brown guy didn't eat too much.

If I were having a last meal I wouls probably just drink some water and coffee. I would not be hungry at a serious time. Like my death.

If I were having a last meal, I agree, I likely wouldn't be hungry. I was just reading about Muhammad's execution, and the 7 deep breaths he took, and it almost sounded clinically like panic attacks I've had, and frankly, I'd be scared about even that (not being under enough, and feeling that occur). I'd love to be able to gorge on Papa John's and fro yo, but I couldn't eat it in the end.
I would want real food of some sort, just to cleanse all the prison food out of my body. Canteen honestly doesn't sound bad. Twinkies and Sprite are real enough.

Im going to go against the grain here and suggest many would enjoy a last meal. Think about it, you've had nothing but prison food for years and small amounts too - the same boring stuff day in day out. (And well deserved too). I think even those who think they couldn't manage a final meal would demolish a few Big Macs, Wendy's *insert favourite meal here* if they were offered one. I certainly would, death around the corner or not

Yes, Ben, they did. But let's note the rather unsubtle difference-they didn't know it was their last meal. I know that many people here bring forward this argument but would you really want to know when you have to die (just out of curiosity)? I'm not saying that the victims had it easier but I surely wouldn't want to know when the time has come.

Yes, Ben, they did. But let's note the rather unsubtle difference-they didn't know it was their last meal. Which would have made it rather more enjoyable I should think.

Those of you that said you would not have a last meal are not talking a load of rubbish. They have been banged up for years and had crapy prison food for years. They have choice to eat what they like. It might take their mind off the up coming event by tasting food that they havent had for years.
I think you would take up the chance of a last meal, dont you. Its easy to say you wouldnt, sitting infront of a computer, with you fridge round the corner.

I don't think I would have any sort of appetite before my execution. I'd probably be nauseous.

You still on Maui, Erick? Just got here last night. Spent the day on the beach getting some badly needed sun and went for a kick-ass drive. Now I'm sitting outside on the belcony looking at the ocean (sun just set). I'll be here until a week from next Monday. Going out for crab legs in a bit. It is so nice to get out of Milwaukee!

I may be inhumane for saying this, but don't you think last meals are like a complete waste of money and food? Considering they will die within hours before even getting a chance to digest it? I think this service would be of more use if the money for DR inmates on their last meal would be given to homeless shelters, or families who need the food. But that's just my opinion.

One inmate did try to offer his last meal to a homeless person. Can't recall his name now but I think it was a pizza he asked be given to a homeless guy. Alas it was turned down. Edit to adit, found him: Philip Workman declined a special meal for himself, but he asked for a large vegetarian pizza to be given to a homeless person in Nashville, Tennessee. This request was denied by the prison, but carried out by others across the country Edit to add found it: Philip Workman declined a special meal for himself, but he asked for a large vegetarian pizza to be given to a homeless person in Nashville, Tennessee. If we were worried about his humanity, we wouldn't be executing him in the first place. This last meal nonsense is therefore hypocritical.
