In pre-modern Europe, granting the condemned a last meal has roots in superstition: a meal was a highly symbolic social act. Accepting freely offered food symbolized making peace with the host.
This isn't just from Wiki, its in a fair few books.

The condemned man ordered a large last meal: a porterhouse steak with A1 sauce, pork chops with barbecue sauce, jumbo fried shrimp with cocktail sauce, fried mozzarella sticks, French fries, onion rings, fried mushrooms, chocolate fudge, black cherries, black walnuts and a Dr Pepper.
