Hi, I'm a student working on a paper trying to explain why people are pro-dp to people who are not. For it, I need personal "interviews" so I thought I would try posting some questions on this message board. If you have the time, I would really appreciate your answers to these questions. Feel free to skip any you don't feel comfortable answering. Thank you so much! Why do you believe in the dp? What one word or phrase sums up why you believe in the dp (ex. justice)? If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion? Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp? Is there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? (can be answered simply yes or no) Do you sympathize with any anti dp beliefs or reasoning (versus you just believe that they are completely wrong)? What is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp? Would you say the dp is moral and why? Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp? What is your political leaning and how does it factor into your views? Thanks again!

1) Justice.
2) N/A
3) No.
4) No.
5) To a degree.
6) Serial rape, serial child molestation.
7) Yes. To willfully murder is to give up one's right to breathe.
8) No, but I'm not there, either.
9) Irrelevent. Being for or against the death penalty has nothing to do with politics, as shown by the posters on this board. Being for or against the DP is an issue that crosses political lines.

(sorry, can't do one word) Proportional to the crime/the only approach to justice for murder victims (i.o.w. true justice is not possible but we can at least approach and come nearer to justice with the DP - thanks to Donnie for putting this into words )If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion? I am christian, and I believe the DP is supported and sanctioned by the Bible. Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp? not that I can rememberIs there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? NoWhat is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp? murderWould you say the dp is moral and why? Yes, I don't know how it could not be. I believe it is the best protection from those who have shown they do not value others lives, that they can never hurt anyone anywhere ever again once it is carried out. Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp? NoWhat is your political leaning and how does it factor into your views? 1. Justice.
2. --
3. No.
4. No.
5. No.
6. Child rape, treason, attempted murder where the victim is left seriously injured and can never be whole again, e.g., paralyzed, brain damage, etc.
7. Yes. Simple fairness. Why should a person take a life and continue to enjoy life? And yes, they have the ability to enjoy life while in prison. And suggestions that prison be made more punitive will never be allowed under the constitution or by the thug lovers.
8. No.
9. I once was very liberal and very pro dp. I am now moderate to conservative and feel the same.

Why do you believe in the dp? What one word or phrase sums up why you believe in the dp (ex. justice)?
When someone murders another, I don't feel bad when they are executed. Whatever the reason or circumstances. That's the simplistic answer, but you asked only for a phrase or word.
If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion? n/a
Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp? I don't remember talking about it with my parents. So I would have to say no.
Is there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? (can be answered simply yes or no) no
Do you sympathize with any anti dp beliefs or reasoning (versus you just believe that they are completely wrong)? yes, I do sympathize with the anti-dp beliefs. I don't agree much with some of the reasoning. Either use the DP equally for all murders, or not at all and have a true LWOP.
What is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp? Murder
Would you say the dp is moral and why? Yes, morality is determined by the majority of any particular society. Our society says that we do not want murderers to live among us. If LWOP was a true and valid statement, it would be the alternative to the DP.
Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp? I don't believe so.
What is your political leaning and how does it factor into your views? I guess I consider myself liberal, but I'm also pro-Dp and I don't believe it factors in at all. I don't vote according to a candidate's view of the DP. It's a personal choice and the issue is unique.

If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion?
N/A
Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp?
No, I was influenced by murderers.
Is there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? (can be answered simply yes or no)
Yes
Do you sympathize with any anti dp beliefs or reasoning (versus you just believe that they are completely wrong)?
Anti's make excuses for not executing, I say what good is it going to do to keep a murderer in a cell for the rest of their lives.
What is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp?
Serial violent crime.
Would you say the dp is moral and why?
It is alot more moral to execute someone that murders, than to keep them around untill the murder again.
Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp?
No

Why do you believe in the dp? In some cases, no other sentence makes sense.
If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion? Religion doesn't have anything to do w/ it.
Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp? NO
Is there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? NO
Do you sympathize with any anti dp beliefs or reasoning (versus you just believe that they are completely wrong)? NO
What is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp? Child molestation
Would you say the dp is moral and why? Don't care about moral. Care about common sense. If you murder an innocent person. You need to be killed.
Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp? NO
What is your political leaning and how does it factor into your views? I am a conservative. Part of being a conservative is being anti crime & being tough on crime. Liberals feel sorry for the criminals & fight for more criminal rights. So my conservative leanings do factor into it.

Why do you believe in the dp? The pursuit of justice. But I don't "believe in" the death penalty. I believe that the DP is essential for the pursuit of justice. As a Christian, I believe that we should show the murderer mercy by providing him with a death that is more pleasant than the deaths of many, if not most, innocent people. For example we should make the murderer's death more pleasant than the death of his victim. We should make the murderer's death more pleasant than the deaths of cancer patients. I also believe that the imposition of the death penalty is important in helping the murderer save his soul. Not mere support, but an unequivical demand. No. Yes, in that "No man is an island" and every murder victim's death diminishes me. Death by torture of a child, any child, is personal to me. No. Attempted murder. Yes, because the just and fair treatment of all is an essential goal of morality. Without the use of the death penalty for murder that goal has been abandoned on a major scale. No. I am a classical liberal, so I don't think it as much impact.

Why do I believe in the death penalty? OK, it's not the first time I've been asked this question!
1 Proportionality of punishment - if you take someone else's life you forfeit the right to your own continuing existence
2 Do my religious beliefs play a part in it? No, but I am a Christian and consider my views to be compatible with my religion even though my reasoning is based on universal human morality rather than my religious beliefs.
3 Was I influenced by my parents? No, my Dad's pro and my Mum's anti and my own husband is also an anti. I made up my own mind on the issue.
4 Personal reason - yes, my best friend was raped and murdered by a scumbag who was never caught and that turned me from a hesitant and rather mushy anti into a pro.
5 Do I sympathise with antis? Well, I understand their reasoning and I feel that some of their points are valid but overall they miss the big picture which is that we must punish those who kill with death. That doesn't mean I don't understand what they say and have respect for their views even though I don't agree with them.
6 Murder
7 Yes, the death penalty is moral. We are all members of a society and we all have the right to life. By murdering another person you forfeit your own right to life and it is entirely moral to execute the offender.
8 Would my opinion change if someone close to me was sentenced to the DP? It would depend on: a) whether or not I thought they were guilty; b) what they had done. If they were guilty of murder, no, it would not. If (for instance) it was a woman sentenced to death for adultery in Saudi Arabia or Iran, I would oppose the death penalty in that sort of case.
9 What is my political leaning? I am a radical, left-wing liberal who is extremely anti-capitalist and hates and distrusts governments. My political views are completely unconnected with my position on the death penalty. Most of my liberal friends are pros and most of my conservative ones are antis. The question of political affiliation has nothing to do with capital punishment.
Hope this helps. Regards

Why do you believe in the dp? What one word or phrase sums up why you believe in the dp (ex. justice)? The death penalty is the proper justice for a henious crime.
If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion? I am Catholic and the Bible does give some support to the death penalty, but I do not need to use or abuse God's teachings to support my moral beliefs.
Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp? No
Is there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? (can be answered simply yes or no)NO
Do you sympathize with any anti dp beliefs or reasoning (versus you just believe that they are completely wrong)?NO
What is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp? treason
Would you say the dp is moral and why? The death penalty is moral because murders give up their rights as individuals when they take a life in an aggravated manner.
Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp? No
What is your political leaning and how does it factor into your views? My politial learning does not factor into why I support the death penalty. But my politcal party, Republican, usually supports it.

Why do you believe in the dp? What one word or phrase sums up why you believe in the dp (ex. justice)?
Prevention
If you are religious, how do your religious views play a role in your belief? Do you find support for the dp within the teachings of your religion?
I have to make sure my thoughts are lined up with my religious beliefs. I do find support for the DP within the teachings of my religion.
Were you influenced by your parent's/friend's/family's belief in the dp?
No. No one else I know has a strongly-held belief on the DP.
Is there any personal reason (for instance, known/been a victim) for why you believe in dp? (can be answered simply yes or no)
No.
Do you sympathize with any anti dp beliefs or reasoning (versus you just believe that they are completely wrong)?
I sympathize with honest anti-DP beliefs except where those people are strongly in favor of abortion rights. I find that particular reconciliation of beliefs to be rather more than I can stomach.
What is the least heinous crime that you believe a person should be sentenced to the dp?
Violent rape.
Would you say the dp is moral and why?
The DP is morally correct because it prevents the murderer from taking another life.
Do you think your opinion would change if someone close to you were sentenced to the dp?
No.
What is your political leaning and how does it factor into your views?
I'd call myself a political eclectic (socially conservative, but against the Iraq war and for the environment). I guess the only way it affects my views is that I believe that people need to be held responsible for their actions.
