Class Debate on Pro DP

Ok in my religion class we are doing a 15 class project on debating certain issues. Each group is assigned a different issue and a view to argue. Now personally I am not pro DP (don't hate me for it ) but since its my assignment I was wondering if anyone could help me put a short list (5-10 things) that support DP in the worldly and religious sense. Herky, I can see this debate is going to be a one sided affair. Since you are supposed be pro but are actually anti than I would say you are not going to be out to win. It sounds like a stacked deck to me. See how teachers can put their own peer pressure on students. Can we get the teacher to say hypocrite??

Why would I hate you, I was active against the DP when I was your age. I still had a lot to learn.

1. God directed humans to use the DP for murder, several times.

2. Jesus, in the Vinyard parable, confirmed that the DP for murder was still required. Jesus confirmed that the DP was still lawful in the story of the woman taken in adultery. Paul confirmed that the DP was appropriate even for crimes less severe than murder.

3. The death penalty requires the use of the DP and the pursuit of justice is a cornerstone of the Christian faith.

4. The use of the death penalty for murder stops the increase in injustice for the murder victim.

5. Adequate use of the death penalty deters potential murderers. (lead us not into temptation)

6. The use of the death penalty helps to save the souls of murderers.

7. The use of the death penalty prevents known murderers from killing again or harming others. (deliver us from evil) At least 810 people have been murdered by murderers who had been convicted previously of murder.

8. The use of the death penalty is a benefit to the families of murder victims.

9.The execution of a murderer removes his evil influence from the world (deliver us from evil)

10. The execution of a murderer enforces the Golden Rule.

11. The death penalty eliminates any possible genetic input to the development of a murderer.

Not at all. Understanding and being able to evaluate and even enunciate an opponents's thinking and position is an important part of critical thinking.

My professor at paralegal school routinely assigned students opposing an idea to argue for it, and vice versa.

I have read that in some debate competitions the participants have to prepare without knowing which side they are going to be on. They find out at the beginning of the debate.

Yeah I plan to use the research I have done against the death penalty to prepare good arguements on points I know they are going to try to make.

Anyway as I was saying...

My beliefs on being anti DP arent that strong and I respect anyones opinion on the matter. However since we get voted on by the class to see who won the debate and get bonus points for winning, I am not going out without a fight.
