Hello, I have a research paper to write on the DP and I would like to know if there are any cases of an innocent person being EXECUTED. I know there are cases where an innocent person is on deathrow and was later exonerated, but has there EVER been a case where an innocent person was executed. If there has been a case, can I get some examples and if there has NEVER been a case, can I get some sources that say so. Thank you so much and I hope the DP is never abolished.

Well, as far as I know there has not been a person executed who was proven to be innocent since the DP was reinstated in 1976. What constitutes proof can be subjective, however. Some people will disagree and name a few cases, but no state has acknowledged that it has executed an innocent since at least 1976, and I personally doubt that it has happened (although I guess it is possible). I would restrict your report to executions that happened since 1976 because that was when the DP was re-introduced in the USA under new guidelines, and it would be unwieldy to examine all cases in American legal history. Some innocent people were probably hung in the 1800s, I suppose.
