Hi everyone. I recieved this email from my sister-in-law today. I thought that all of you who sent protest letters would want to read it. Also, we are asking that everyone continue to write letters for James to keep his file active. The information is contained in the email. Again, thank you all so very much! I love you- Heidi
To those who wrote letters for James: Many months have passed since Joe and I requested your voice in speaking out against parole for Mr. Santos Solis. On November 30th I had a telephone interview with Mr. Jose Aliseda, Parole Board Member out of the San Antonio office. This was a frank and forthright conversation about the realities of James' death, Mr. Solis' imprisonment, and the system within which we find ourselves entangled. Mr. Aliseda was respectful, reasonable, and to a degree, compassionate during our conversation. He listened to what I had to say, answered my questions and just as importantly, he listened to your voice as well, through every communication you've sent.
Parole was denied this year for Mr. Solis on December 1, 2006.
Mr. Solis has an approximate review date of November 1, 2007 for his next opportunity for parole. One strongly stated piece of advice from Mr. Aliseda was to keep this file active. Together, our voices are powerful and do have an influence in the parole review process. I will notify all of you again when Mr. Solis' file is sent to the parole board for review. This will be a critical time to forward your opinion in this process, just as you did earlier this year.
In an effort to keep the file active, please feel free to send communication as you feel compelled to do so. I also encourage you to enclose copies of photos of James if you like. The photos help to move James from being a statistic and simply a named victim in Mr. Solis' file to being a person who had been busy living their life. He becomes real to people like Mr. Aliseda and anyone else reviewing Mr. Solis' file.
To send communication, you must include the following information:
Offender: Solis, Santos III State ID: 07296364 TDCJ ID: 01334571
Communication should be sent to:
Raven Kazen, Director Victim Services Division 8712 Shoal Creek Blvd., Suite 265 P.O. Box 13401 Austin, TX 78711-3401
Joe and I want to extend our deep and sincere appreciation for your ongoing support. We are approaching the 2nd anniversary of James' death and the profound emptiness remains but there are memories you've continued to share which allow our hearts to remember and for that, we are thankful.
Warmest wishes to you,
Joe and Teresa
-Please feel free to share this message with others we may have missed in this broadcast-

Heidi--
I did not know about this but I am thrilled he was denied and will send a letter now. Where can I find pictures of james? You can pm me if you'd like.
Take care and best to you during the holidays.
Shelli
Edited to add... I just read up on James' case. Sending pictures to Mr. Solis will not be a bad idea either. I'll snag an address for anyone who wants to remind him of the two lives he stole and won't be home for Christmas.

I forgot, for anyone who does not know about this James was my nephew and was killed by a drunk driver three days after my first child was born. The man who killed him also killed his young girl friend and seriously injured her sister. This experience is why I joined this board. The board has been both an outlet for my anger regarding James' death and a support in my sadness.

Yeah, Shawni he was really something. So bright, thoughtful and caring. The first thing that my sister-in-law saw when she went to his apartment after his death was a 8 by 10 picture of his mother. Now you tell me what other 18 year old you know has that much love and respect for an adult. He was beyond selfless and the world is much darker without him in it- for many people as you can see from the sites. I just miss him.

I hope it becomes standard procedure to charge these negligent drunk drivers with murder if they kill. Everyone receiving their driver's license should understand fully that if they drive drunk they are at least guilty of "attempted murder" and should be punished severly!

Heidi,
I am soooo very sorry about your loss...I lost a very good friend my freshman year in high school. She was in a car with 3 other people. The driver of that car (who was plasterd) broke his arm...the other passenger is paralyzed from the waist down and then there is Tommy who I grew up with since I was 3 who will never be the same mentally. He is now 40 and has the mentality of a 12 year old. Then my senior year in high school I lost another close friend because of a drunk driver. The sad part was that in this case the driver of the other car who was drunk only received probation. This was back in 1985 and it was not seen as anything but an "accident" The worse part was that this was his 3rd DUI. I am so glad times have changed since then!!!! I would be more than happy to send a letter.
Jen

The best thing that we can do in this situation is to keep the file active. It is unbelievable to me that they were even considering his parole at the time, he had only been in prison for 8 months. The guy killed my nephew AND my nephew's girlfriend AND seriously injured her sister. If you are really gung-ho I am sure you could send an email once a week. That is what I do. Thanks so much! Heidi
