I am trying to find out more info on this puke. I know that she is in a Nevada prison serving time for MURDERING her own 4 year old son.
Her husband committed suicide in prison, and her brother has been executed for what was refered to as 'The U-Haul Slayings' that took place in 1994.
I read that she murdered her 4 year old son, Binh shortly after the U-Haul slayings. But I can't really find out much about it. I am writing this to see if anyone else can find more than I did. Maria obviously murdered her son in about 1995 - 1996, but don't know for sure any dates or any circumstances.
I was reading on her, because I was considering her for our 'Mutt of the Week'. She goes before the parole board September 21, 2005. (in 2 weeks)

If only Maria had been given a teddy bear at just the right moment in childhood, she wouldn't have killed her own son later in life. Maybe this mutt got the baby blues from Andrea Yates. Or does it not spread that way?

There may be a book. members.fortunecity.com/teraisa1/the_u_haul_murders.htm I suggest you contact the author. If anyone opposes her parole, she's probably the one. Also, remember that parole boards generally require letters 1 or 2 months before the scheduled hearing. Check their rules. And again, it always pays to find their procedure manual on the internet, read the criteria for parole and fashion your letter on the criteria. If you google her brother, Duc Cong Huynh, you will find additional info, including info posted on this website. I assume that if you do the same for her husband, you will find even more info. If you look at the Nevada doc locator, they have her eligible for parole in January '06. I assume she earned some sort of credits to push up her parole date, or the website is wrong. That's the problem, you can never know the exact date with certainty unless you are notified by the parole board. So, maybe doing news searches is the best way.

I did notice that most begin the review process a couple of months prior to the hearing date. I'm still searching for a candidate for this week. We may want to change it to a bi-weekly mutt. I'm not sure that choosing one each week is giving people enough time to decide, and to write....before it's time for the next one. What do you guys think? We also are open to any suggestions on 'who to write' in reference to? As many 'mutts' as there out there, it's a bit hard to find the ones with upcoming parole hearings unless they are a 'famous' case. There are plenty of viable candidates...we just have to figure out how to become aware of them.

Throw 'em in a pit and light 'em on fire, for all I care.

Interesting note about Judge Mills Lane...he is also recognized as one of the top boxing ring referees in the world....interesting guy... As far as I’m concerned,” said Judge Mills Lane, “they committed one of the most heinous crimes that I’ve been involved in, both as a prosecutor and a judge. I was a judge for eight years and a prosecutor for twenty. Everyday they breathe, there’s no justice. And that’s the way I feel about them.” Judge Mills Lane knew what he was saying, after all, he presided over not one, but three separate trials in relation to these U-Haul murders I am trying to find out more info on this puke. I know that she is in a Nevada prison serving time for MURDERING her own 4 year old son. Her husband committed suicide in prison, and her brother has been executed for what was refered to as 'The U-Haul Slayings' that took place in 1994. Why would they not be in with gen pop? Death row inmates are segregated from the genpop inmates, for everyone's protection. You're actually more likely to lose your life among the genpop inmates than you are on death row, where are you kept in your own cell 23 hours a day.

Ok...now I feel really stupid. Is EVERYONE in prison in Cal. in 'protective custody'....or why are these particular mutts? I guess I don't understand why your everyday, run-of-the-mill prison mutts aren't just tossed in a cage together? I thought that maybe because they are coming up for parole they might be housed special or something?

Oh.......so those that you posted are on Death Row? (I knew that DR mutts were not kept in with the general population...I didn't know that the mutts you posted were DR) sorry for the confusion...If so....they are not candidates for us. We are writing to 'block paroles' on certain mutts. If they are on DR, they won't be up for parole...thankfully.

Those amenable to vaccine are housed one to a cell and are only fed by other DR inmates. They have no physical contact with prison staff.

That looks like the general population of a standard, small prison. OK, so the mutt of the week has to be up for parole, and then you write the parole board to keep the mutt in prison. Fabulous idea. I like it.

Keeping him in prison.............

I looked for a while and this is all I could find other than the child died on Jan 25, 1994.
Paper: Los Angeles Times Title: DOWNTOWN - Girlfriend of Hostage Suspect Kills Son, 4 Date: January 27, 1994 Section: Metro Page: B-2
The girlfriend of one of the suspects in a Jan. 16 hostage standoff in Downtown Los Angeles killed her 4-year-old son before trying to commit suicide in Reno, police said Wednesday.
Acting on a tip from Los Angeles police that Maria Leacando Calambro, 23, might have made a suicide pact with her jailed boyfriend, Reno officers went to Calambro's mobile home.
There they found Binh Canto Calambro, his wrists slashed and a rose on his chest, lying dead on the bed next to his unconscious mother. Calambro had slashed her wrists, police said.Calambro's boyfriend, Duc Cong Huynh, 38, a suspect in the Jan. 3 murders of two employees of a Reno business from which Duc had been fired, and Alvaro Calambro, 20, were arrested in Los Angeles early on Jan. 17.
Los Angeles officers alerted Reno police to a possible suicide pact between Duc and Maria Calambro after Duc allegedly tried to kill himself in his jail cell over the weekend.
