Was just checking out the Texas Death row sight and came across the section about offender whom are no longer on death row. and extracted the following summary. Just a question ? Why the change in judgment for so many ( other than those who died via various causes)? My understanding was that the once the justice system has proven the guilt beyond reasonable doubt then the penalty stands?
Reduced to life -------120
Reduced to years in prison ----19
Reversed ------11
Died in prison------- 26
Commited suicide -------7
Overturned -------- 4
Dismissed --------- 5
Murdered in prison------- 3
Released --------- 6
Killed whilst trying to escape----- 2
Aquitted --------- 3
Reuced to life dur to being juvinile at time of crime---------29
Just a question ?

Cases get overturned on technicalities sometimes 20 years after the crime. Witnesses die, move, forget or change their testimony. The sense of urgency on a case that is so old is not there. Perhaps the victim's family is died and there is no one to fight a reduction in sentence so the prosecutor just goes with it. As many different cases as there are, that is probably how many different explanations you would find for why this happens. If you have read anything at all on this board, you know that sentences change all the time. Exactly the point when people argue that LWOP is not really that. Nothing is final justice aside from execution. I think many more have had their cases overturned and on retrial they have been sent back to the row... I don't know of any sources which would show that information though Hey cyclone Thanks for that .. it was intersting reading... some intersting issues arise from some of the reasons why inmates escaped the penalty. much appreciated cyclone thanks again
