Really don't know much about using soy replacement in food, but if there is any truth in the press conference then there is a concern for many people; not just prison inmates.

Tell it to the Japanese! Soy is low fat and high protein. These prisoners are so use to eating crap that they don't know what's good for them.

I know a few people that have soy as an animal diet replacement, and they seem ok to me. I had the impression (in the press conference) they were referring to genetically modified soy, probably a cheaper substitute, which is used in the prison diet. Rayozz

Rayozz I don't know if they were or not, but I see nothing harmful with genetically modified food. Don't you eat Tofu in Australia? Fried bean curd?

Have no idea whether it is GM in Australia. No I don't eat it, and haven't even tried it, yet it has been available. I'm a bit older and avoid it, 'cos I don't know what it is. I very seldom buy take-away. Fish&chips, Chinese and a bit of pizza; perhaps 5 times a year. Restaurants, I ask. I do cook, and very well; but always market fresh, aside from herbs and spices which I can't account for. That's just me. Rayozz

Rayozz In areas where there is a large Asian presence, you will find a lot of restaurants that have it on their menus or put it in their dishes. Then there are the health food stores. Yuck. We like to use it in quiche because it gives it bulk, little calories, and plenty of protein. It's really just low fat protein, flavored with the spices of your choice. Try it... you'll like it.

There's nothing wrong with soy, it is a high protein meat substitute. But, some people's digestion can't take it and it makes them pretty ill. These guys in Illinois are jumping on that particuar bandwagon. Mummy always fed em REAL hamburger. They better get used to it methinks.
