Regarding William Mayfield, CDC# D20090
William Mayfield, who shot and killed Mark Snyder, a 29 year old Willits man, will be considered for parole on April 23, 2009.
Mayfield was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 1985 after a Mendocino jury found him guilty of second degree murder. Because of the callous nature of the killing, the California Attorney General’s Office, which prosecuted Mayfield, will oppose the parole.
Around the time of the murder, William Mayfield’s wife, Bridget, was physically abused by Mayfield. She had filed for divorce, and was living apart from Mayfield and dating Mark Snyder. In the months before the murder, Mayfield told friends that he was going to “get Mark.”
On March 12, 1985, Mayfield got his .357 magnum revolver and loaded it with five rounds. Mayfield got in his truck, put the .357 on the seat next to him, and drove from his home in Willits to the Redwood Valley trailer home where Bridget and Mark lay sleeping.
At the trailer, Mayfield put the .357 in his belt, then went to the side of Mark’s truck that could not be seen from the trailer and let the air out of two tires, disabling the truck. Mayfield went to the rear of the trailer and rolled a propane tank over to a window. Balancing himself on the tank, Mayfield removed a glass panel from the rear window and climbed into the trailer.
Mayfield went to the bedroom where Bridget and Mark were sleeping and jumped on top of Mark. Mayfield pulled out his .357 and shot Mark through the throat, killing him. After the shooting, Mayfield drove back to Willits, disposing the .357 along the way.
The Attorney General’s Office is asking that protest letters are sent by April 15 opposing Mayfield’s parole to:
