Hello,
I'm a student in Scotland, Britain, and am currently researching for a dissertation titled "Is capital punishment justifiable retribution in the US?" and it would be so good if anyone could answer my questions! It's really difficult to get people in America to give me their direct opinions so all answers would be welcome!
1.) Do you believe it is justifiable in all cases?
2.) If not, in which cases do you believe it is justifiable?
3.) Do you think there should be a time limit for the length of time spent on death row?
4.) Do you think the state should provide better defense lawyers?
5.) Do people feel less safe living in states where the death penalty is not in use?
6.) Do you think it is a sufficient deterrent?
7.) What would be a good alternative to the death penalty?
Thank you!

Do you believe it is justifiable in all cases? In all cases of murder, yes. Do you think there should be a time limit for the length of time spent on death row? One year. 4.) Do you think the state should provide better defense lawyers? Yes. Do people feel less safe living in states where the death penalty is not in use? I wouldn't know. Do you think it is a sufficient deterrent? Not yet, but that's not why I support capital punishment. What would be a good alternative to the death penalty? Irreversible life in prison without parole, visitors or exposure to sunlight.

Do you believe it is justifiable in all cases? No 2.) If not, in which cases do you believe it is justifiable? the death penalty for the worst of the worse, by virtue of having aggravating and mitigating factors at the penalty phase 3.) Do you think there should be a time limit for the length of time spent on death row? Yes, 5 years 4.) Do you think the state should provide better defense lawyers? No, they already provide adequete defense lawyers. 5.) Do people feel less safe living in states where the death penalty is not in use? No 6.) Do you think it is a sufficient deterrent? It is not a deterrent and never has been. It is and always will be punishment for a crime. 7.) What would be a good alternative to the death penalty? Nothing, the alternative is for murder to never happen in the first place.

1.) Do you believe it is justifiable in all cases? Yes, but it is justified, not justifiable. No. No. But we should always insure that the defense lawyer for the murderer is as good as the defense lawyer that the murderer's victim had. No. No There is none.

It's really difficult to get people in America to give me their direct opinions so all answers would be welcome! 1.) Do you believe it is justifiable in all cases? Yes. Death row? No death row. Here's the plan: Guilty, death, gavel strike. Stuff is swept off the defense table, and the murdering SOB is laid out on it. Jurors gather round and each injects the guy with poison. Of course. Statistically, states without DP have a (mostly) much lower murder rate than those with DP, so it'd follow people ARE safer. It's not a deterrent. LWOP for all of them instead of death of the few. You're welcome.

1.) Do you believe it is justifiable in all cases? I believe it is justifiable in all cases of first degree murder 2.) If not, in which cases do you believe it is justifiable? N/A 3.) Do you think there should be a time limit for the length of time spent on death row? I believe there should be a time limit for the courts to decide the appeals. There is already a time limit on the defense and the AG to file them. And there should be an entity to monitor and enforce the time limits on the courts. I don't know that there is any way to keep a judge from sitting on it as long as they want to at this time. 4.) Do you think the state should provide better defense lawyers? I don't know the requirements in every state, but it seems to me they have adequate representation now. 5.) Do people feel less safe living in states where the death penalty is not in use? I don't know. Some seem to, from what I have seen posted on this site. 6.) Do you think it is a sufficient deterrent? I think it would be a much better deterrent if it were used more often. I know it gets the attention of the teenagers in juvenile detention that I speak to. An interesting article at www.nytimes.com/2007/11/18/us/18deter.html?_r=4&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin 7.) What would be a good alternative to the death penalty? Perhaps LWOP where the DP can not be applied, or will not be applied by a jury. However, if the DP were gone, at least some investigations have shown that more murderers will get out again sooner. That is the last thing I would want to happen. Another link for you www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/02/25/Study_Death_penalty_doesnt_cost_states/UPI-10121235613932/The main topic of the article is that states with the DP actually appear to save money. But in that article also is that in states with the DP, more murderers appear to be incarcerated longer as a result of the plea bargain options that are available, and this at less cost. To me that means there is no adequate effective substitute for having the DP as law in a state. And anyone who wants murderers incarcerated longer, is working against themselves, if they are trying to abolish the DP.
