Ladies and gentlemen, something is happening in the United States regarding capital punishment this year. I just browsed over the "scheduled executions" page and noticed that there has been a dramatic, almost incredible, increase in the amount of executions that have taken place in 2009 as compared to 2008. It's amazing. Last year every single execution was stayed until after June. This year almost every single execution scheduled has taken place. What has happenned? I mean, according to some here, last year the death penalty was in a clear decline because of the only 36 executions that took place. This year is the opposite. Hmm. I wonder. Love, RED

Decline in world economy means that goverments will take extraordinary measures to keep people in work!!
Either that or somebody worked out that there was money left over from 2008 and it was better to use it up before the fiscal year ended.

Last year there was a moratorium till June. The supreme court halted executions till they ruled on the LI issue. When that got cleared up executions resumed.

Oh, I'll get used to it...when it actually goes in decline. I'm only going by numbers here. After all, numbers are numbers, right? I see. So you think that the moratorium imposed by the U.S. Supreme Court last year had something to do with the reduction in executions? I mean, is that why so far most scheduled executions have actually taken place? Love, RED Last year there was a moratorium till June. The supreme court halted executions till they ruled on the LI issue. When that got cleared up executions resumed.

All 6 executions for February have went off thus far. Overall, 13 of the 15 scheduled for 2009 have went off so far.
However, March is not looking too promising with one commuted and one stayed already.

It may be catch up. For example, take Bell tonight. He should have been gone in April 08 but Kaine spared him while SCOTUS reviewed the KY case. In any case, with Bell's execution, we will be 7-0 so far for February.
