...I would like to take a stab at the LWOP argument. It seems to me that it isn't enough to say that the people of California could have simply chosen to keep a killer like Tookie locked up forever. Getting rid of the death penalty means that we have to also consider the foreseeable consequences of guaranteeing criminals that they can kill as many innocent people as they want, for whatever reason at all, without even facing the theoretical possibility of placing their own lives at risk... www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/005937.php

Tookie revisited, or moonbats galore ...Mind you, I don't find anything particularly crazy about opposing death penalty to the point of protesting every single execution, especially since they happen about once every two and a half years in California. What I find a bit suspicious are the people who demand the death of various elected officials as opposed to the death of a convicted quadruple murderer. I guess that on some level I don't really believe in the sincerity of their opposition to death penalty... izrailit.blogspot.com/2005/12/tookie-revisited-or-moonbats-galore.html

A woman was charged with murder Saturday in the stabbing death of her ex-girlfriend's new lover in southwest Houston. Shirley Ann Jefferson, 24, confessed to her ex-girlfriend that she'd stabbed the woman Friday evening at the Bayou West Condominium Community in the 9800 block of Clear Creek. The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, had recently started dating Jefferson's ex-girlfriend. All three women lived at the complex. The stabbing took place at a neighbor's apartment, where the victim had gone to use the phone around 5 p.m. Friday. "A few minutes later, while she was on the phone in a bedroom, (Jefferson) walked in and started stabbing her," said Sgt. J.C. Padilla of Houston Police Department's homicide division. Jefferson stabbed the victim multiple times before leaving the apartment. "It was a pretty bloody scene," said officer A. Ibarra, Padilla's partner. The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Shortly after the stabbing, Jefferson's ex-girlfriend "saw the police and ambulance and was told what had happened," Padilla said. "Later, she went and talked to the suspect and the suspect confessed to her and told her she loved her." Jefferson was taken into custody at the complex after a witness identified her to officers, he said. She is being held in a Harris County jail, where her bail is set at $50,000. Neighbor Ashley Mitchell, 15, said she saw Jefferson "acting crazy" in the parking lot shortly after the stabbing. "She was yelling and screaming and she took her pants off," Mitchell said. "I think she had something in her hand, but I couldn't see what it was. As soon as she heard the sirens coming, she took off."

A northwest Harris County man fatally shot a woman believed to be his mother early today before killing himself, police said. Their bodies were discovered about 5 a.m. when a Houston police SWAT team forced its way into a home on Royalbrook near Willancy. A police standoff began shortly after 2 a.m. when a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy went to the home to investigate a 911 hang-up call. When no one answered at the door, the deputy turned to leave. At that point, someone inside the house shot him, police said. He called for help. Other units, including a SWAT team, arrived. After that shooting, the man called a friend and said he shot his mother, officers said. The friend called authorities. The man who fatally shot himself and the woman in the house have not been identified, but police believe she is his mother. The deputy has not been identified. He was taken by Lifeflight to Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was shot in the leg. A bullet also grazed his abdomen, police said.

A northwest Harris County woman told investigators that she fatally shot her husband out of fear for her own safety. When deputies arrived just after midnight at the couple's home, Angela Espinosa, 34, told them that she had been a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband, Jaime Espinosa, 40. Detectives later said they haven't uncovered any past domestic abuse incidents connected to the couple. Angela Espinosa told detectives that she shot her husband while he was asleep. The pistol, a 5-shot .38 caliber revolver, lay on the kitchen table when deputies arrived at the scene. The couple's three daughters, 11, 13 and 15, were asleep inside the home when Jaime Espinosa was slain. Angela Espinosa was charged today with murder. She remains in custody at the Harris County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
