To add: Outlawed public dissecting, burning perpetrator alive, quartering or disemboweling regardless of crime. That's the "cruel" part. But there is also the "unusual" part. Disemboweling is not obviously excessive for the crime of disemboweling. It seems perfectly proportionate. However, it is impossible to enact these days, even if the states were to want it, since it has become unusual. (And there is no way to make it usual except by first enacting it.) I haven't time to look it up now, but I might guess that their reasoning was that it wasn't unusual for the crime of desertion. When you have time Bernard still waiting.

One of the last strongholds of the death penalty. I suppose progress comes slowly to a state where they still dress like 1890s cattle-tenders.

I have a nice Stetson that I wear here in Ohio. It is a practical item when I am going to be out in the sun for a while, or if it is raining. Sometimes I wear it with shorts and flip-flops. Wearing an appropriate hat, doesn't mean that anybody is dressing like a cowboy. Similarly, wearing a baseball cap doesn't mean that anybody is dressing like a baseball player.

If she murdered. The article seemed to cast some doubt on the matter. The young lady lawyer who wrote the article is a pro-criminal activist who works for a left-wing propaganda organ. It would not be possible for the article to exist without such perfunctory casting of doubt.

Yes, that's probably fair. Oh well.

The gentleman who wrote the comment quoted above is a pro-death penalty propagandist who contributes to a pro-death penalty website. It would not be possible for him to respond to an innocence claim in a web article without his casting some perfunctory doubt upon it.

I was also an active opponent of the death penalty for decades. I have seen many claims of innocence that have been proven false. The innocence claim in the article cast doubt upon itself by its weakness.
