So many stays this year. Should have been about 60 executions this year, but the tally will be in the 20s, the lowest since the early 1990s. Johnson will be the last execution for 2015.
A jury convicted Marcus Ray Johnson of the March 24. 1994 malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, rape and aggravated battery of Angela Sizemore. The jury recommended a death sentence for the murder, finding the following statutory aggravating circumstances: the murder was committed while Johnson was engaged in the commission of a rape; the murder was committed while Johnson was engaged in the commission of an aggravated battery; and the murder was outrageously and wantonly vile, horrible and inhuman in that it involved torture, depravity of mind, and an aggravated battery to the victim before death.
This has to be a first:
"Marcus Ray Johnson, scheduled to die by lethal injection Thursday evening, asked for a six-pack of beer with his last meal, but prison officials turned him down. "

Georgia Department of Corrections says Johnson refused to eat last meal given (which was fish and grits) , he also refused to record a final statement.
Probably sulking because he didn't get his beer.

Seriously, though - if you're going to kill someone, the least you could do is to give them some good beer. Their refusal was uncalled for.

AT 9:05 the supreme court denied He has been executed ...at 10:11 pm 3 hours after the scheduled time of execution. All of these extra appeals; there has to be a change in legislature. Actually, I just finished reading a fiction book (The Chamber by John Grisham) about an execution in Mississippi. It almost felt like a "true crime" novel. The machinations and conniving tricks of the lawyers were almost identical. I probably would have trouble understanding what was going on, had I not been a member of this site.

I love all of Grisham books, read all of them. I know what you mean. Actually, I just finished reading a fiction book (The Chamber by John Grisham) about an execution in Mississippi. It almost felt like a "true crime" novel. As I recall, that was a dramatization of a true crime. Good movie, too. I cheered when they gassed the old fart at the end. The depiction is accurate. When the gurney looms, it's "say anything" time. Hence things like the tard card, recanting witnesses, etc. As I said above, it's not about the poor schlub we're going to whack any more, it's about "the cause," and the condemned be damned. (as of course, they are.)

How long before you anti's start claiming the alcohol will stop the execution drugs working effectively and you start a whole new round of appeals?

Actually if it is the defense attorneys (or any anti) " like Fug" who want to give him a beer, by all means let them. In prison it is not called beer, it is contraband.

I would rather give that beer to a homeless vet on a hot day than someone facing the execution chamber. Just saying.....
