What's the point?
It serves no purpose. It's extremely expensive ( as if we had money to spare). It's no deterent. It's rarely given and much less used. It creates scum pals that all pros hate. It creates antis which is a ridiculous waste of time, money and effort. It only makes murderers famous.
What's the point?

The primary point is to provide a reasonable approach to justice. It also saves lives by preventing murderers from killing again. That may not be of interest to you, but it is important to the saved victims and their families and friends. Modern statistical evaluation has proved the deterrent value. Antis exist because their ultimate goal is to reward murderers and other criminals. That is why eliminating the DP would not save money. Most of those who are anti-DP would immediately shift their support to the next, more unjust form of punishment, requiring the same expense for legal antics. It might actually cost more because the murderers would be around longer for more appeals, not to mention the additional human and monetary costs of the new crimes committed by the unexecuted murderers. Any lasting fame of murderers is based on their crimes, not their executions.

I don't know Big Al, looking at Gary Gilmore alone, what did the utah state department of corrections spend on gary in 1978? 79? 80? 81? 91? 2001? 2011? last year AND, AND, AND he hasn't reoffended. not one time. that seems to answer the expense, deterent, the point and the purpose parts of your question, dontcha think?

Its the Death Penalty law thats Fooked, the one allows only a select few murderers to be eligible. Its the legal system thats fooked, the one that only selects a few special cases that are eligible to be tried for Capital Murder. Its the appeals system thats fooked, the one that allows the few special cases that do get as far as Death row to sit around for 10, 15, 20 years or more dragging their appeals out as long as they can. Its not the Death Penalty thats the problem.

So, your going to throw in the towel, the next step is no real LWOP is that ok too? Even if only a few face the DP what about all those victims then your letting go of LWOP automatically you know that.......you call that a waste of time and money? Not me !!! Who gives a crap about who writes them, we have more serious issues going on here. Sad as well a really fluked up what this has come to, not the forum I mean America, since when do we belly up on murderers?

You've gone "belly up" on murderers (whatever that means) since you free them after 20 years. And "scumpals" ? really? Cant you find an intelligent word?

The death penalty is supposed to be the highest form of punishment the state can give. If it were delivered in a more timely manner it would be more of a deterrent but I don't care about it deterring anyone. I care about the murderer serving his sentence. He took a life in such a way that made him eligible for the DP and if the courts have found him guilty of those crimes and sentenced him to death, he should pay that ultimate price.
The state should pay for one appeal and it should be a quick appeal (provide all of the resources needed to eliminate any doubt of guilt) and then the sentence should be carried out. Maximum time taken to carry out the DP should be no more than 2 years. While I don't care about the DP being used to deter anyone, I think if it were carried out in a more timely manner it actually WOULD serve as a deterrent.
Yes it's expensive. But if we did as suggested above, threw all available resources at one appeal and executed (or freed) within two years it would actually be less expensive than supporting them year after year after year as they continue to breath air their victims weren't allowed to.
It DOES serve a purpose. When finally executed, it removes one more murderer from our midst.

You've gone "belly up" on murderers (whatever that means) since you free them after 20 years. And "scumpals" ? really? Cant you find an intelligent word? Sorry tipsy, you know I loves you son but you are wrong. We don't have to find an intelligent word to replace sucmpal. The intelligence of scumpals isn't all that high, so if we found a more intelligent word, we would confuse them to no end. These are people that think it is just peachy keen to write, fall in love with, carry their monster's dirty underwear, harass MVSs, lie, cheat, do whatever they can to free someone that murdered. Intelligence isn't a thing that scumpals are known for. I can tell you what else they are lacking and that is morals. scumpals don't care who they hurt or what they do as long as their sick pathetic needs are met and I have no idea what those needs are but I would say they are about as low as the murderers they love. I guess we could come up with a new word. I think it was WA wickedly amoral or something similar that named them maggot mailers. That was a good one. How about shyt sniffers, then again there is always murderer lover. I am sure Joseph or Cali can up with some better names. I'm so sorry that the DP is such a hornet's nest to be detested but then again when murder comes knocking on others' doors then it isn't anything but a necessity or wishing it could be considered as a necessity. It is easy to throw away someone's rights as long as people don't think they are giving up their own rights. I hope none of you will ever have to look up one day and wish that they had fought harder. I hope none of you will ever have to mourn for decades or longer the loss of someone you love more than the blood in your veins. I hope none of you will have to face all the crap that murder hands you, such as waiting for an arrest, the arraignment, hearings, trial(s), testimony that slanders your loved one (that nasty little rule about not defaming the dead), the verdict, the sentencing, the appeals, and for those of us not lucky enough to had the option of the DP for the murder of our special loved ones, hoping no one gives them early release, parole hearings, eventual release, the probability of meeting the murderer on the street, maybe even having to face that said murderer will do it again. Our lives are obsessed with the murderer. Not by choice but by the complete take over of our lives from that day forth.

Have there ever been scumpals that harass the MVS of their prison buddy's murderer? I haven't heard of any and I'm not doubting that they don't harass them, but I never heard of one doing so.

It boils down to the fact that a mere handfull has the balls to kill every murderer. What's the point in executing a minute percentage of them?
Just stop the drama and give them life with no parole. Save money and time and eliminate Scumpals. Yes Tipsy. Scumpals.
I would never fight that and many many others wouldn't either. I prefer them dead. Let them rot in prison. Not basque in any spotlight.

There are many occasions where murder suspects have confessed and given up locations of victims when threatened with the DP. Worth keeping just for that reason.

Good example of that is the Green River serial killer case. Gary Ridgeway serial killer. Sparing him from the DP was not mercy for him, it was for the the many families. That agreement to the truth also his cooperation in locating the remains of his victims. No long hellish court trial to go thru.

The minute percentage are the worst of the worst. And actually, finding out the number of Texans who are on DR for sexually assaulting and murdering elderly women was shocking to me. It's up there with baby killing of course. Just totally the most vulnerable of our society being preyed upon, why should we stand for that? They don't deserve GP LWOP with TV, visits, books, phone calls, sex if so inclined etc etc. Screw that! These offenders are the worst of the worst imo. They should be obliterated off the face of the earth.

?? Huh? Every murderer? Capital only...don't know about the other states but in Tx it's in commission of another aggravating felony: kidnapping, robbery, rape, pecuniary gain, child under age 6yrs. I don't think we have the more than one person in the murder as an aggravator, but i could totally be wrong about that...murder for hire too i think, as the hiree...and Law of Parties. (ex: the Texas 7)
