Has been on death row a long time. TYLER (AP) — A 50-year-old man on death row for the slaying of an East Texas man during a home break-in more than 21 years ago has been set to die April 9. State District Judge Christi Kennedy in Tyler set the date Thursday for Ricky Lynn Lewis.[img Lewis was convicted of the September 1990 shooting death of 45-year-old George Ray Newman. Evidence showed he also raped Newman's fiancée at their home in Smith County and stole her car. She managed to call police to report the attack. A federal appeals court in November rejected Lewis' claims he's mentally impaired and ineligible for the death penalty, clearing the way for the execution date to be set.

Ricky was a young boy He had a heart of stone Lived 9 to 5 and worked his Fingers to the bone
Just barely out of school Came from the edge of town Fought like a switchblade So no one could take him down
He had no money, ooh No good at home He walked the streets a soldier And he fought the world alone And now it's...
Chorus: Eighteen and life you got it Eighteen and life you know Your crime is time and it's Eighteen and life to go

Fifty-year-old Rickey Lynn Lewis faces lethal injection Tuesday evening in Huntsville for the death of 45-year-old George Newman and the rape of Newman's fiancée at their Smith County home. At the time of the attack, Lewis was on parole for six months after serving 21 months of a 25-year term for burglary. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles last week refused a clemency request for him and the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to review his case. The execution would be the second this year in Texas.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas convict with a lengthy criminal history has been executed for fatally shooting a man and raping the slain man's fiancee.
Fifty-year-old Rickey Lynn Lewis received a lethal injection Tuesday evening for the murder of 45-year-old George Newman more than 22 years ago. Newman's slaying and the rape of Newman's fiancee took place at their home in a rural area of Smith County, about 90 miles east of Dallas.
Lewis had been in and out of prison five times in less than seven years when he was arrested three days after Newman was killed in September 1990.
No last-day appeals were filed to try to delay the punishment.
It's the second execution in Texas this year. At least 11 others are scheduled for the coming months.

An interesting last comment:
“If I hadn’t raped you, you wouldn’t have lived,” he told the rape victim in the moments before the single lethal dose of pentobarbital was administered. “I didn’t kill Mr. Newman and I didn’t rob your house.
“I was just there. ... I’m sorry for what you’ve gone through. It wasn’t me that harmed and stole all of your stuff.”
Fourteen minutes after the lethal dose began, Lewis was pronounced dead.

Surprised he didn't turn them in to avoid the death penalty. Think his statement means that one of the other two did the murder and if he wasn't raping her, they would have killed her as well.

Yes I agree, that is what he meant! But do you believe him? If he is saying the truth then technically he at this point may not even be in prison any longer, let alone put to death. I 100% pro death penalty, but when cases like this come up it makes me question the system a bit.

Either way he would of been executed even if he didnt pull the trigger he was part of the robbery & rape & murder, texas has the law of partys, 1 in all in , so he would of been screwed anyway..

Urgh. Im Pro death for rape too so doesn't bother me *shrug*
Lewis thanked his friends who watched through a nearby window "for the love you gave me."
"I thank the Lord for the man I am today. I have done all I can to better myself, to learn to read and write," he said, appearing to choke back tears. "Take me to my king."
As the drug began taking effect, he said he could feel it "burning my arm."
"I feel it in my throat. I'm getting dizzy," Lewis said before he started to snore and, seconds later, lost consciousness.
He was pronounced dead 14 minutes after the lethal dose began.
Good Riddance !

Just as being stupid doesn't excuse criminal behavior, it doesn't excuse your comments either.

He wasn't innocent of rape or being there as a party to robbery and murder. They didn't have loaded guns with them as fashion accessories.

It depends on the state law but someone responded to me earlier that it doesn't matter if he actually committed murder. The rape murder & killing are one in the same by law...because he was present for them all. I'm not sure i believe in that, but for him to feel that raping her was ok because he didnt murder or rob shows his lack of responsibility .. Someone could easily say, had you not been there you wouldn't be dead now. Meaning you put yourself in the situation by committing a crime at all.

Most states consider you a murderer if during the course of the commission of a felony a death occurs. It's either called a "felony murder rule," or is including in the definition of first degree murder. This man participated in a robbery/home invasion that resulted in a death. He is as guilty of the murder as the person who pulled the trigger.
That can also include the death of an accessory during the course of the crime. There was a case in either Louisiana or Texas several years ago in which the participants in a robbery were charged with felony murder after the death of one of their accessories, who was shot by the store owner and died.
I believe that in the case above, the state parole board granted clemency to the individual who was about to be executed based on his claim that he didn't know a robbery was going to be committed.

I'm glad that rabid undesirable thing has too been annihilated for good. I haven't been following April's annihilations until recently and I must say I'm happy for all the family members of the murder victims they've been served justice they for so long deserved.
