Board refuses clemency petition from CantuHOUSTON — The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has refused a clemency petition from condemned killer Peter Cantu, set to die next week in Huntsville for a notorious 1993 double rape-slaying in Houston. Maria Ramirez, clemency director for the parole board, said Friday the panel voted 7-0 to reject Cantu's request that his death sentence be commuted to life. The 35-year-old Cantu was one of five young gang members condemned for killing 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman and 16-year-old Elizabeth Pena. A sixth, 14 at the time, got a 40-year prison term. Cantu is set to die Tuesday evening. Two from the gang he led already have been executed and two had their death sentences reduced to life when the U.S. Supreme Court banned execution of people under 18. www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/tx/7152745.html

Upcoming Execution In Ertman-Pena CaseHOUSTON - The book will soon be closed on a double murder that shook Houston to its core. The leader of the gang that snuffed out the lives of two teen girls is scheduled for execution on Tuesday. People remember most horrific murders by the name of the killer: for example, Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. But nobody knows Peter Cantu. On the other hand, everyone who was in Houston in June 1993 remembers Jennifer Ertman and Elizabeth Pena. Their names are now carved in granite at the northwest Houston park where they were raped, stomped and strangled. "This case galvanized the residents of Houston,” says Andy Kahan with the Houston Police Department’s Victims’ Services. The images are indelible -- Jennifer’s father bellowing as he was kept from the crime scene. Or the “perp walk” of the smug teenage killers and their unrepentant chieftain. "One of the reporters asked him a question that he didn't like,” recalled Neal Cowley, who was there that day. “And he actually started kicking wildly at the cameras.” The video shows a handcuffed Peter Cantu yelling, “You don't get the f--- away from me, I swear to God, man," just before he kicked at a FOX 26 News microphone. Cantu was the ringleader of the Black and White gang, which pounced on 14-year old Jennifer Ertman and 16-year old Elizabeth Pena as the girls took a shortcut through the woods, trying to get home by their curfew. Juries handed out five death sentences and a 40-year term for the one juvenile involved. Two have been executed. Another two were commuted to life in prison, since they were younger than 18 years old when they took part in killing the young girls ... but Peter Cantu will be the last to leave 'The Row.' "He's been on death row longer than Jenny and Elizabeth lived on this planet,” notes Kahan. The Ertman-Pena case lives on through the precedents it set. It was the first time surviving relatives were allowed to make a victim impact statement in court, after sentencing. This crime also opened the death chamber door to loved ones of the murdered. "In 1996,” says Kahan, “the Texas Department of Criminal Justice reversed their policy and allowed victims' families, at their request, to witness the execution.” On Tuesday night, Kahan plans to join the Ertman and Pena families to watch Peter Cantu draw his last breath. That should happen shortly after 6 p.m., barring a call from a court or Governor Rick Perry. It will be the third execution witnessed by the two families, which is also a modern-day record, explains Kahan. www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/texas/upcoming-execution-in-ertman-pena-case

Peter Cantu Execution ProtestedDeath penalty protesters used a monument for two slain girls as a backdrop for their Monday morning demonstration. That monument for murder victims Jennifer Ertman and Elizabeth Pena is on the Houston Independent School District campus of S. P. Waltrip High School, where the girls attended. The protest took place because of the scheduled Tuesday night execution of Peter Cantu. He was sentenced to death as the gang leader of several young men who brutally raped and strangled the 14- and 16-year-old girls in 1993. Protesters said they opposed the death penalty because innocent people have been convicted. They did not say Cantu had been wrongly convicted, but they still felt his sentence should be commuted to life in prison. "We're not saying he's innocent," said Gloria Rubac with the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement. "He is one of the worst of the worst, but the point is we have a fallible human system. So lock Peter Cantu up. He's obviously a deranged person that no one wants as a neighbor. But lock him up. Texas is filled with prisons. Don't execute him." Waltip High School officials told FOX 26 neither the protesters or the media had permission to be on the campus. But even after officials came to tell protesters to leave, the demonstration continued for almost 10 minutes uninterrupted. www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/local/100816-peter-cantu-execution-protests

Got news for you Gloria - if you know he's not innocent, then the system has NOT failed. The system has it exactly right! And what kind of perverted, sick, deranged, inhuman, heartless excuse for a human being protests FOR the sake of a murderer/rapist with their backdrop as the memorial in remembrance of his innocent child victims? Whether you are pro or anti, "closure" is one of the biggest crops of shyte for a meaningless word I have heard come out of the US. There will never be any closure whatever the sentence for a perp of that sort. Nothing you can do to him will ever bring those parents closure, if it did it would elevate his worth.

Want to make a dam bet?? There is closure for the families in the form of closure on the POS. They don't have to put up with the family of the murderer crying to the media or scumpals writing to them and plastering it all over the internet. They don't have to wake up every morning and think about their loved one and then be reminded that the POS that created all this devastation is sitting comfortably and lying, lying, lying to do whatever they can to save their sorry hides. After tomorrow night Cantu will be dead just like Jennifer and Elizabeth. The POSs will no longer matter just like they have tried to make the victims not matter. YES THERE IS CLOSURE. SO STOP TRYING TO SAY THERE ISN'T. I AM NOT TALKING FOR ALL MVS BUT FOR HOW I FEEL MYSELF. To Jennifer's and Elizabeth's families, I hope all goes well and you will get the peace that you so well deserve. You have fought valiantly and you have done what you had to do. I think if your girls could tell you anything, it would be THANK YOU.

To me , its more like closing a book. Nothing changes, but there is no more story the murderer can write. All you get to take away from it is the memory of what was written, and the lessons learned. It does not bring anyone back , but it can help the survivors to cope. Felix is right , this is not something you can ever close. You can bury it though. Six feet deep. From there , the POS does not get to write any more chapters in a life he doesn't deserve.

These vile protestors just enjoy causing hurt. They simply do it differently to their condemned pets in jail. I think ive figured them out by now. We already know they enjoy the 'companionship' of murderers/rapists, its just they aren't killers themselves. They get their kicks from emotionally distressing others. I don't even believe they are sincere in their Anti death penalty stance either. Its just a cover to use to hurt people. You read of people joining in G8 protests purely as an excuse to riot. Same with these freaks

Heres what one imbecile said over there - 'But friends, our posts will pop up at the pro sites. Laughing and joking about "us", about people who are trying to end these state sanctioned murders. But i'd rather be laughed at and made fun of, then to celebrate the death of a human being. Sick to my stomach when i think that these people are raising kids too, who will end up thinking the same thing. When will they ever learn.' Sick to MY stomach of THEM raising children. And they're mostly single British women living off the state
