Death row inmate found hanged in his cell Associated Press A condemned inmate from far northeast Texas was found hanging by a sheet in his death row cell in an apparent suicide, state prison officials said today. ADVERTISEMENT Deon Tumblin, 27, was found Tuesday evening at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice outside Livingston, about 75 miles northeast of Houston. He had been condemned for strangling a Texarkana woman, Evelyn Reed, 75, at her home in January 2000, then taking her car. Efforts to resuscitate Tumblin at the scene failed and he was taken to the prison infirmary where he was pronounced dead. The prison system's inspector general's office was investigating the death. Tumblin, who arrived on death row in February 2001, did not have an execution date. Police on the Arkansas side of Texarkana arrested Tumblin and a woman companion in the victim's car, which had been reported stolen. Police said they also found Tumblin had some items that belonged to Reed, a widow who had been caring for her 46-year-old invalid daughter who lived with her. The daughter, unable to speak, was in a bedroom of the home when her mother was killed, according to testimony at Tumblin's trial. Prosecutors said Tumblin hit Reid with a wrench, choked her, broke a belt trying to strangle her and then slammed his knee into her neck. Prosecutors also said he had a history of impulsive violence, drug use and criminal behavior. He earlier received a four-year term in Arkansas for forgery and firearms possession. He spent five months in prison and was paroled in May 1997. Defense attorneys tried to portray Tumblin as the product of an abusive family who was teased as a child because of a problem with crossed eyes. But physical evidence, Tumblin's statements to police and the testimony of his accomplice, Marsha Burnett, prompted a Bowie County jury to convict him and sentence him to death. Burnett, now 24, received a life prison term in exchange for her testimony against him. Prosecutors had considered seeking the death penalty against her until she agreed to the plea deal. She's imprisoned at the Mountain View Unit near Gatesville and isn't eligible for parole until 2040. Burnett was identified as the daughter of a home health care nurse Reed had hired to help with the care for her own daughter. Burnett, who was the star witness at Tumblin's trial, had been to the victim's home numerous times, testimony showed. This article is: www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2882685

I've debated on whether to post this.... but maybe it will help you all to see what goes on on death row. I can already hear the comments, I am sure many will say he and everyone on death row deserve to be treated this way, but maybe it might make some think a little. If it does that, then this post will be worth it.
Letter from an inmate on DR in Texas.
Greetings, Regards & Salutations!
My name is Lee Taylor #999344. I lived in #57 cell next to Deon Tumblin when he hung himself on 11-02-04. I would like to give witness to why or the events that lead up to why a man would choose to hang himself.
I have not known Deon "Spotlight" very long. I've been on two pods with him, but he was my friend. Mainly, he was human and deserved the respect of life. He has been getting into trouble off and on, as one does in prison sometimes, but due to respect and love for his Mother, he started to keep out of trouble to get his level I back. The only way he could see her for 4 hours was to be on level I. He needed to see her. Not only wanted, needed! So he made an effort to stay out of trouble. This is where things went wrong. One week before he made his level I, he was trying to "pass" something (book, magazine…etc) when Officer CO III Walker ran over and stepped on his hand. That is assault. If an inmate did that, there would be hell to pay, but they (officers) wouldn't get any ranking officer on the pod so he could tell the rank that she stepped on his hand. Let me say that in here when you make trouble, your name gets around fast. You are actually rumored to do things your not even doing. Sure you have to do something to get to be the gossip of these officers talks, but a lot get blown out of content. You know how the chain goes? Tell one person something and 25 people down the line have a different story? True! The thing is that some of these people will pre-judge you by what they hear, never even having laid eyes on you! When the officers on the pod refused to get him rank, he "jacked" the dayroom (meaning refused to come out until a ranking officer shows up. They (administration) force us to that extent because we have to do something to speak to rank when the officers refuse to call them. But guess what? Wrong or right, you're getting a case! They don't care why you refused to come out to talk to rank. You're wrote a case. Guess what? Level II for 3 months is the punishment, guilty or not! So when a week goes by, Deon was waiting for his level I, the administration set his level I "off" for three more months, messing up any chance for a visit with his mother. He begged the officers and some lowly sergeant's to let him talk to the Lt. Or higher rank. They just laughed him off. After all, he was "Spotlight", the rumored troublemaker.
I can't say why he went to this extreme. Only to say he told me in a hole between our cells that he was tired of hurting people. Emotionally as well as physically. He said he had been doing that all his life. He just wished to see his Mother. He couldn't hurt her again, he promised to stay out of trouble in order to get a Level I so he could see her. When he couldn't get the high ranking officers down there, he took 30 or so Thorzine and other stuff. That got them down there pretty quick. He could've died then. He said later he thought he was dead. They took him away to the hospital to "pump" his stomach. Then to the mental hospital called Jester 4. While he was gone, an officer was told by rank to shake his cell down and pack his property. The officer did, or so I thought. I watched the officer go in there and come out with property, but when Deon got back, some of his personal things were still there scattered out as though it was mere trash. Get this - a noose he had made was still on the place he had hung it. He tried to get rank again. Guess what? The officers still just laughed it off. When he received his property, the officer did pack , there were things missing. So he finally got to speak to a Sgt. About that, but they couldn't do anything. These Sgts get paid to do basically nothing. If you don't talk to a Lt. Or UP, you don't get anything done most times. As a couple days go by he got a couple more cases and over all, I don't really believe that the officers conspire to screw you "much". But in some cases, it does happen. I believe that fully in his case and he talked to the Major about getting all the cases dismissed so he could see his Mother. The Major seemed like she cared about this. After he finally got to talk to her. A lot of times when you talk to some rank, they will reply "well the Major said this or the Major said that". Well come to find out, the Major was unaware of the situation completely! She said she never said those things. She seemed to be willing to work with Deon. At least that is what I heard her say. Over the next two or three days, he talked to Major Nelson and Lt. King about the situation. Looking back now, I realize he started to detach himself from the environment around him. The day he hung himself, a couple of guys told him they weren't going to "kid" around with him about not getting his level. We use jokes to release our pain, suffering and boredom. He said "thanks" and that he needed to be left alone today. Cool, we respect that. We left him alone. He went to rec. Looking back I was caught in the shower and I remember thinking that he didn't like the happy go "Spotlight" I had become fast friends with. When I got to my cell from shower, he said he needed his reading books back and gave me mine back. So we did that. Then he said "I'll hollar at you later". When the officers brought last chow at around 5:30pm, he wouldn't respond. When the officer in the pickett cut on the overriding cell lights, the two women officers screamed loudly and took off running. It only took a few seconds to have at least 40-50 officers there. They were between 1st and 2nd shifts so there were plenty of officers. Note: I write this on Level III now because of the lack of respect for my friend and human life these officers showed Deon.
With all those officers there, they ran up to the door and saw him hung up. I could hear a woman say "look at his tongue" then Lt. King said "Spray him". What??? All the inmates went off!! Because they sprayed him with gas!! He could've still been alive! Why spray him with gas? I was in population where there is always riots. I have been in riots where there was less officers/enforcements there. They had no right to spray Deon with gas people! With the chance he could still be alive, they should have rolled (opened) the cell door and with all the re-enforcements got to him! But this is what they did. They sprayed the gas 2-3 times and walked away from his door! To wait for gas masks. Dammit, he could still have been alive! Why!? All the inmates were mad! We cursed them and begged them to go in there and get Deon. They just cursed back at us. Finally when they got him out, it was too late. I lost all composure. I spit on an officer in front of my door 4 or 5 times. I was screaming at them for the lack of respect for Deon's life. They could have saved him! But they sprayed gas! I was emotionally crazy! I went all the way off. They took Deon out and came back and gassed me 3 times and suited up a 5-7 man "team" to come in my cell to force me out. I fought them. I kicked and tried to do what I could against them. They gave me 4 assault cases and here I am on F pod. I am pretty beat up, but not too bad. Mainly, just sad and angry that someone (my friend) had to hang himself. This is the catch people. When he took the pills (Thorzine) when he got back to the unit after getting his stomach pumped? The administration is supposed to place him on "Suicide Watch! Where they watch you every 15 minutes. Guess What?? He was never put on Suicide Watch to my knowledge. If he was (I don't believe he was), they, like always, the unprofessional officers laughed it off.
"Spot Light" Rest in Peace!!
Thank you for reading this.
Respectfully, Lee Taylor #999344 "Tinywood"
p.s. As yourself….Why this stuff never happened so much on Ellis? Why over here, people are suddenly dropping their appeals and killing themselves? This place is kiling us mentally! Just as the state kills us physically.

Lee Taylor such a charming man, we should just take his word as gosspil. From the Texas DOC On 04/01/99, during the daytime, at TDCJ-ID Telford Unit dayroom, Taylor fatally stabbed an adult black male offender multiple times with an 8" home-made weapon. Taylor and one co-defendant had engaged in a fight with the victim due to racial tension between Taylor and the victim. Taylor was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas (a recognized security threat group).
From the Attorney General of Texas office Elkie Lee Taylor Scheduled to be Executed
AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott offers the following information on Elkie Lee Taylor, who is scheduled to be executed after 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.
On June 24, 1994, Elkie Lee Taylor was sentenced to death for the capital murder of Otis Flake, which occurred in Ft. Worth, Texas, on April 1, 1993. A summary of the evidence presented at trial follows.
FACTS OF THE CRIME
On the evening of April 1, 1993, Elkie Lee Taylor (aka Ronnie Lee Watkins) and an accomplice smoked crack cocaine with an acquaintance staying at the home of Otis Flake, a 65-year-old mentally ill man. While at Flake's home, Taylor and his accomplice were observed looking around the house for things to steal and were asked to leave. Flake's houseguest departed shortly thereafter.
Taylor and his accomplice returned in the early morning hours of April 2, 1993, and ransacked Flake's house, taking jewelry, cash, a television, and other items to sell for crack. Flake's houseguest returned to find the front door open and the house in disarray. She also saw Taylor and his accomplice coming from the back of the house and called to them. Taylor had a white bag in his hand. Upon entering the house, Flake's houseguest found Flake sitting up against his bed. His hands were tied behind his back with white plastic tubing, his feet were tied together with a coat hanger, and a T-shirt and two coat hangers were wrapped around his throat. Flake died of asphyxiation due to strangulation.
Taylor admitted to his roommates on separate occasions that he and his accomplice had committed two murders. The first murder occurred 11 days earlier and seven blocks down the street. The victim was an elderly man who lived alone. He was discovered with an apron and a coat hanger wrapped around his neck. Later, when asked if the police were in the neighborhood because of him, Taylor boldly admitted that he had wrapped a coat hanger around a different man's neck and that "dead men can't talk." Taylor smiled and laughed about his offenses.
When Taylor was apprehended after leading police on a four-hour chase, he was driving the cab of a stolen 18-wheeler. The chase ended when a Texas State Trooper stood in front of the truck and shot out its tires with a shotgun, causing the truck to stop. Taylor admitted to police that he and his accomplice had gone to Flake's house, and that he had tied Flake's mouth, hands and feet, and that he had taken jewelry, cash, a television, and other items to sell for crack. However, Taylor claimed that his accomplice killed Flake. Taylor also admitted that two weeks before, he and his accomplice stole a TV from an 87-year-old man but had been caught by him in the house. Taylor admitted that he grabbed the man. However, Taylor again claimed that his accomplice killed the victim with a coat hanger.
PROCEDURAL HISTORY
Taylor was indicted on March 18, 1994, in the 213th District Court of Tarrant County, Texas, for the capital offense of murdering Otis Flake in the course of committing and attempting to commit robbery and in the course of committing and attempting to commit burglary of a habitation on or about April 2, 1993. After entering a plea of not guilty, Taylor was tried before a jury in the 297th District Court of Tarrant County. He was found guilty of the capital offense on June 23, 1994. Following a separate punishment hearing the next day, the jury returned a verdict in which it affirmatively answered the first two special punishment issues and answered in the negative the third special punishment issue. In accordance with state law, the trial court assessed Taylor's punishment at death.
Taylor appealed his conviction and sentence to the Court of Criminal Appeals of Texas, raising 24 alleged points of error. The Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed his conviction and sentence on April 24, 1996. The Supreme Court denied a petition for writ of certiorari on Oct. 21, 1996. An execution date was set for March 26, 1998. The date was set aside when counsel was appointed for the purpose of representing Taylor on his state writ of habeas corpus. Taylor filed his original application for writ of habeas corpus in the state trial court on July 13, 1998. On Jan. 19, 2001, the state trial court issued findings of fact and conclusions of law recommending that relief be denied on Taylor's original application. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals adopted the trial court's findings and conclusions and denied habeas corpus relief in an unpublished order.
On May 31, 2001, Taylor filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Fort Worth Division. On July 13, 2001, the district court granted the Director's motion for summary judgment and denied Taylor's request for federal habeas relief. On Aug. 9, 2001, the district court denied Taylor's application for a certificate of appealability.
On Aug. 15, 2001, Taylor filed a notice of appeal in the Fifth Circuit. On Oct. 10, 2001, Taylor filed a motion for certificate of appealability and brief in support. On Feb. 5, 2002, the Fifth Circuit denied Taylor's request for COA and affirmed the district court's denial of habeas corpus relief in an unpublished order.
On May 22, 2002, Taylor filed a petition for writ of certiorari in the United States Supreme Court. On Oct. 7, 2002, the United States Supreme Court denied certiorari.
Taylor filed a successive state writ with the Court of Criminal Appeals on Jan. 16, 2003.
CRIMINAL HISTORY
Taylor's documented criminal history reflects that he had been in trouble with the law several times prior to his 1993 capital murder of Otis Flake that culminated in his sentence of death.
In 1990, Taylor was convicted of burglary of a building. In 1992, Taylor was convicted of burglary of a habitation. In addition, the jury learned that
Taylor had made threats against several people in his neighborhood who had signed a petition against his release on bond on prior charges. Taylor had also committed several burglaries and an assault for which he was not prosecuted. Taylor was arrested following an automobile chase from Ft. Worth to Waco, during which he tried to ram police cars and run over two troopers standing at the side of the road, and that the truck he was driving was stolen. While in jail, Taylor had assaulted one inmate, was a disciplinary problem, and had threatened another inmate.

So, Deon Tumblin was crying for his Mommy and still behaving like a total sh*t when he'd been told to be a good boy. At least he had the option of complying with the prison rules and the mental capacity to comprehend that his actions would pervent him from attaining his goal. Poor Evelyn Ried's mentally handicapped daughter is still crying for her Mommy, she will cry for the rest of her life....she will never understand why a "bad man" came to her house and snuffed out her beloved Mommy, she has had everything she knew and loved, Mom, home, neighbours, friends, daycare etc: snatched away by this terrifying scumbag...and he had the audacity to complain when he couldn't get his own way, stamping his feet like a baby demamding that the "Big Daddy" prison officer come and sort out the "naughty bully prison gaurds." I am ecstatic that the shower of sh*t has been swept away by his own hands...he did everyone a favour and saved the country a pile of money.....to all killers in there.....follow his example. Lee Taylor ..... Droning on about how unpleasant it is in prison doesn't stir any sympathy with me, if you'd followed societies rules initially, you wouldn't be there.

Very interesting, Doc. Please note than the same Elkie Taylor who wrote this letter had his execution date stayed 2 years ago because he was "retarded". Yeah, he sure sounds retarded to me....I guess most retards can read and write the English language. Hopefully somebody will use some of his "correspondance" in court at his mental retardation hearing.

The very fact hes a murderer and a member of such a dispikable limb of satan should be sufficient to fry the bastard.

1. It was not "Elkie" Taylor that wrote this. Go back and read again.
2. No matter who Deon was or what he did, the guards should be held accountable at a higher level of action because they are "supposed" to be better than the inmates on death row. So, tell me, is the action of gassing this guy when he has hung himself actions that would be deemed higher standards than the inmate? Shouldn't the reactions of the guards first to be to roll back the door and try to save him?
3. As to if his story is true.... all you have to do is call TDCJ and find out the facts. Sorry people, not all on death row are scum bags, liars, etc.

Also, keep an eye on the newspapers, this is not going to go away. The families are upset over many things that are happening there and it will come out in the paper. You can also call TDCJ and ask.........
The guard was in the wrong to gas Deon when they found him hanged in his cell.

You americans are funny people...what will make the situation better with the murderers death? Will the victim be alive again? No! Most murders are insane people, and that don't qualify them for death! And they are still human beings! However, there are cases when the murders do deserve death, for example rape in combination with murder. just some thoughts from me // A swedish citizen

J if you a true christian or a Jew not one those that makes things up like homosexuality is ok, just so you can sin. You will notice that in the bible it says have no mercy for a murderer put him to death. So from that perspective you should have no moral problems.
Also don't forget we play god when we choose to send someone to prison. In either case a mans life is ruined. The only logical thing you can do if you don't want to play god is not participate in any form of judgement.

What about Moses? What about Paul? They committed murder yet God used them for his purpose. What makes you think that he may not have a purpose for someone on death row? The God I know is a merciful God, a loving God, a loving unconditional God. some times it takes people to hit bottom befor they realize or find God and many on death row have hit bottom. They never thought about their consequences or even that they would end up on death row. It never crossed their mind.
If God chooses to take this person, then it is HIS choice, not ours. Putting someone in prison for breaking the law is different, FAR different than taking their life.

I'm sorry it isn't, in both cases you judging a man. As for Moses and Paul, I'm not god. However I don't think god is going to use all 600+ on CA's death row. Note I could be wrong but I doubt it especially as he command us to put murderers to death.
Like any good parent god is loving, but he also punishes.

I personally don't think any of us are qualified to "play"God.However I do think we can be of assistance to God from time to time. You know how it goes some days theres just nothing to do,nothing on tv worth watching etc etc,I'm sure God has slow days as well so why not execute a few of our less desirable scums on DR and give God something to do like maybe say "hey scum bag, burn in hell!"Just a thought ya know. Also I think some people are mislead by the "i'm crazy,I'm reformed,I found God,"act that DR inmates put on.I am convinced that of the total number of people on DR singing this song for the fools outside to hear there MIGHT be 1 genuine article in the group. How many more people do we let a "reformed christian"murderer kill before we finally realize it was all a bunch of bull.I personally say to hell with them we got them tucked away in a nice cozy cell on the row, save some innocent lives and shove the needle as far up the scums vein as it will reach.Maybe even use a rusty dull 1 for good measure.KILL THE KILLERS let God sort the good from the bad.

You are amazing, the inmates on death row, which you claim you have gotten to know, had a trial and were convicted and sentenced bya jury of their peers, the correctional officers have yet to be charged with anything and you have them convicted already with only the word of a death row inmate, you are pathetic. Watch the papers for what their slated views, the news media will print anything to sell their papers, they flash a headline and if they are wrong they print a retraction in small lettering on page 80. I sure will watch the papers and believe every word they write, I am amazed you are so gulible it is sad.

The Officers did the right thing. The only good thing your buddy probably did in his lifetime and you're complaining about it? Take responsibility for your own crimes first, try to make your victims family feel one step better by begging for forgiveness. Make peace with God. Here's the cherry on top. There is one less murderer on death row eating drinking and enjoying the simple pleasures of life that he had no right to enjoy. Try following in his footsteps, you'll make the world a better place. Another cherry on top; He is paving the way to help eliminate prison overcrowding... I hope you and the other murdering bastards you call your 'brothers' die the same way your victims did.

Shaka it says in John 7:24 to judge righteous judgment. It also says in 1 Cor. 6:1-4 about judging matters in Church. It says in Matt. 7:1-2 and Rom. 2:1-3 It talks about not judging others. But what it means if people will read it is don't judge if you are doing the same thing. So the ones who shouldn't be sitting in the jury box are current murderers. We all make judgments everyday good and bad. Most our probably in our minds. I know when I see someone with tattoos all over their body and pink or green hair I think how ugly. But I usually don't say anything out loud. Sometimes I may think someone else may look nice if they look normal. We often judge people by their behavior. I hope you will notice that many antis on this board have no problem judging pros and probably visa versa. So see we all judge. A person just has to be careful when they do. It is hypocrisy that we need to be careful of.

Droning on about how unpleasant it is in prison doesn't stir any sympathy with me, if you'd followed societies rules initially, you wouldn't be there. you poor man i cant help myself but pity you. you react in such an animal way and dont seem to think over what you re saying. i dare hope you do this because you re on a forum and not in real life. At least he died by himself and not killed by these pigs.i sure want my country to be safe, but i dont want blood on my hands...how many more innocents? God is our only judge and we all will get what we deserve.peace.

You americans are funny people...what will make the situation better with the murderers death? Will the victim be alive again? No! Most murders are insane people, and that don't qualify them for death! And they are still human beings! However, there are cases when the murders do deserve death, for example rape in combination with murder. just some thoughts from me // A swedish citizen Don't worry..no doubt you will insulted now by some of the bloodthirtsy pros here...they are the ones who will say that Europe is going to hell because it is more civilized. Note that this happened in Texas. Had the Cokehead In Chief still been governor, he'd have punished the guards for denying him the perverse pleasure of Texecuting the man. He had a condemned kept alive on life-support so he could be Texecuted. I can see why the US is seen as barbaric overseas....
