You're correct, there's no life without parole in Texas. You either get life or death.
A life sentence in Texas means, unless there are extenuating circumstances, 40 years before the possibility or parole. The parole can be denied and the prisoner can spend his life in prison without ever receiving parole.
Of course, 40 years in prison are hard years and the convicted prisoner may not live 40 years in that environment.

Then if a person murders more than one person are they given more than one life sentence? I am thinking of Efrain Perez and Raul Villareal and the other thugs who were involved in the murder of Jennifer Ertman and Elezabeth Pena. If they get their sentence reduced because they were underage at the time of the murder will they get two life sentences. I wouldn't like it but I could live with it if they never got out.

Yes, they can be given more than one life sentence but sometimes they're served concurrently which pretty much means they just have one life sentence. It is disconcerting to think of them being released while they're still in their 50s, isn't it, all buttoned up and having "served their time." Of course, they could also claim "special circumstances" which would allow their paroles before 40 years was up. All that because they were short their 18th birthday? I don't think so. The state of Texas isn't famous for commuting sentences just because some little whiner cried "Foul."

I hope they don't get a life sentence I hope the get released. They have spent a long time on death row and I don't think they are a continuing threat to society. They have learned a lot from being in there.

I'd invite Raul or Efrain. Medellin had done this before (raped and killed) and he was the main one that grabbed the girls. I think Efrain and Raul and some of the others like the 14 year old were at the wrong place at the wrong time and yeah they could have tried to do something to prevent it but I don't think they should ALL DIE because of what some of them did.

Please go to this site and read it www.murdervictims.com/Voices/jeneliz.html Your opinion that Joe Medellin was the "main one that grabbed the girls" is incorrect. Peter Cantu had a previous conviction for assault. They all participated in the rape, torture and murder of Jennifer Ertman and Elizabeth Pena. Joe's brother, the juvenile in this case, did not get the DP because he was too young. The others all did and deservedly so. I certainly don't think 10 years is an appropriate amount of time served. So, do you think that Jennifer and Elizabeth deserved to die because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time?
