Earlier today, embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was unanimously convicted and removed from office by Illinois state senators, following a four day impeachment trial. Senators voted 59-0 also to forever bar Blagojevich from holding public office in Illinois ever again.
The state's lieutenant governor, Pat Quinn, was immediately sworn into office as Illinois' new governor.
It's not known what Quinn's position on the death penalty is. I suspect this will become one of the first matters he will have to address as governor. Whether or not to continue the indefinite moratoriums on executons in Illinois in place. Though I know nothing about what might happen down there; it would be my guess that Quinn won't re-issue the moratorium. Besides, none of Illinois' present death row inmates are anywhere near an execution date anyway.
