Hey everyone,
My class is going to have a debate about DP and Life Sentence. However, only me and 2 other students support the DP and the rest of the students support Life Sentence. So I want to hear some of your opinions on why you should support DP and some counter arguments against Life Sentence
Basically, the students that are against the Death Penalty are saying: 1. Killing the murderer won't solve anything 2. You can make an error and kill an innocent person 3. Everyone deserves a second chance
Thanks,

Everyone deserves a second chance Thanks, keep it simple #1 "solve anything" is pretty broad. it will however gaurantee that the murderer will not, ever, do it again. that's pretty much all that matters in the entire issue here. #2 maybe, but not likely. and given the numerous variations of innocent, don't get to wrapped up in it. simply agree it is possible and move on. #3 second chance?? no, "everybody" doesn't deserve one. next my personal suggestion is make two lists. title one, "murders after previous murder conviction/sentence." then list the victims names. you can find a pretty good list of such on the title page of this board. title the other "murders committed after execution". then again list the names of the vicitms. then stay with it, don't get sucked into tangents

So I want to hear some of your opinions on why you should support DP and some counter arguments against Life Sentence Basically, the students that are against the Death Penalty are saying: 1. Killing the murderer won't solve anything Execution ensures that that particular murderer will never kill again. Also it is the appropriate punishment for capital murder.2. You can make an error and kill an innocent person You can also make a mistake and let a murderer out of prison who then kills an innocent person. This is much more likely, and happens all of the time. An executed killer has never been later found to be innocent, so as far as we know, this argument has no bearing in reality. In order to be executed, a murderer has to:
- be arrested
- be araigned
- have enough evidence against them to be brought to trial
- have special circumstance that qualify the murder for a death sentence as a possible outcome
- be in a jurisdiction where the prosecutor will seek the death penalty
- be found guilty by 12 people who, in most cases, must agree without exception
- be sentenced to death by those 12 people, again requiring that every single one agrees on the punishment
- have no appellate issues that can overturn the conviction through the many levels of their state appeals
- have no appellate issues that can overturn the sentence through the many levels of their state appeals
- have no appellate issues that can overturn the conviction through the many levels of their federal appeals
- have no appellate issues that can overturn the sentence through the many levels of their federal appeals
- be in a state that actually carries out their capital sentences
- have no issues that cause a parole board to grant clemency
- have no issues that cause a governor to grant clemency
This is just off the top of my head; there are many more circumstances that must come together in just the right manner.3. Everyone deserves a second chance Not murderers. Why give them a second chance to kill another innocent person? Thanks,

So I want to hear some of your opinions on why you should support DP and some counter arguments against Life Sentence Basically, the students that are against the Death Penalty are saying: 1. Killing the murderer won't solve anything It solves the problem of how to approach justice for a murder victim. It does not provide justice because the murderer always comes out ahead. But, as long as a murderer is alive the unfair treatment of the murder victim increases. At least the execution of the murderer stops the injustice from increasing. But not as often as you kill by making the error of not killing a convicted murderer. Convicted murderers have killed more than 400 innocent people. Yet there is no evidence that an innocent person has been killed by execution. How can anyone drive a car, knowing that they could make an error and kill an innocent person? How do murder victims get the second chance that they deserve? When a murderer kills again after they are convicted of their first murder, why did they get a second chance to kill again and how does their second (or third or fourth) victim get their second chance?

Hey everyone, 1. Killing the murderer won't solve anything He'll never kill again. If they had executed Thomas Silverstein after his first murder, two inmates and a prison guard would not have died. In the past 30 years, more than 1100 men and women have been executed, and despite tests and new evidence none have been proven to be innocent. They use it to kill again...and again and again. Why should innocent people be put at risk just so someone who stole someone else's life can have one of their own?
