Hello.
My name is Laura, I'm 17 years old, and a student on a Belgian Highschool.
I was given an assignment to do about ethics. I chose "Death Penalty" out of free will, because it's a subject with many sides.
I haven't really decided yet, if I'm pro or contra death penalty. Can anyone help me by giving their arguments to be pro, so my vision on death penalty becomes more clear?
Thank you.

Most people agree capital punishment is based on an instinctive reaction to rid society of a psychopath. When someone is murdered, most societies have always expunged the murderer without a whole lot of discussion. It's only recently, compared to the rest of human history, that westerners have questioned the morality of retributive justice. Keep in mind also that most people on the planet live in countries with some form of capital punishment. It hasn't gone completely out of style yet. You simply have to make up your mind what you want to do with murderers.

The Death Penalty has been around in some form or another since the beginning of times. From the Wild west "hangings" to today's "lay down and go to sleep" methods and all points in between.
I think the actual fairness of the "This for That" make sense to most but on a moral and spiritual level it takes many other directions. There are arguments on both sides that are valid. I wish the paper your writing encompassed "violent convict behavior while incarcerated" and specific crimes and victims with the who, what, when, where and how so you could get a full picture to make your own mind up on not just the DP but the things that get you there.
Best of luck to you on your work, its really a great topic with many twists. Interests breeds knowledge and each person must make out their own determination of which side of the line they will stand on. I found it a very easy choice for me. One of the most revealing drills to assist me in solidifying my views was to read story's about crimes and insert names of those O loved into the pages. Even into the survivors names who were very real to me.
You will do what's right for you.

The purpose of the DP is to pursue justice. Although the use of the DP can never achieve justice, it is the minimum acceptable action that society can use to treat its members as if equal treatment were a goal of the society.

The question you have to answer is what would you want to happen to the murderers of your parents, or a favorite aunt or uncle, or a sibling. Would 10 years in jail suffice for you? Would 25 years? Those are the questons you must answer before you make a decision on this topic.

Thank you all for your replies.
I have finished my paper, after broad research. I've come to the decision, that I'm against death penalty. I live in a country where it is abolished. I realise very well that, when indeed, to quote the example of Rickz, one of my loved ones is murdered, I'd have to adjust my vision on death penalty. For now, I can only hope that will never happen. For my paper, I could not keep all the victims in mind. My heart goes out to them all, and I admit, that after I read what has happened to them, I also want the murderer to pay. I just not think his death is the right way. I thank you all for helping me out. Especially the main site has been a help for research and making up my mind.
Goodbye.

So, your conclusion was one form of justice for you (i.e., when your love ones are tortured and murdered) and another form of justice for everybody else. How hypocritical! When I think of Belgium I think of those little girls getting kidnapped, raped, held in captivity, starved to death and buried alive. So, tellus -- what is the average prison sentence for murderers in Belgium? Ten years? Fourteen years?

Hi Laura. It is very nice of you to come back to thank people for helping you. I am glad you were able to find what you needed on the site. Charlene Thank you all for your replies. I am opposed to capital punishment because I cannot frankly see the need to kill killers if you already have them caged. That said, I would admit it would be challenging to continue to hold this view if opne killed a child of mine, my instinct would be to do something lethal to him. If I acted on that I would still think it was wrong of me.

She needed to take a deeper look, must have been very young. Does she want a murderer released living next door to her? Does she want a murderer in prison for life to possibly murder his bunk mate or guards? Maybe she would change her mind if it happened to her family? Whatever. I never dreamed it would happen in mine either.
