Dear Family, Friends and Fellow Advocates: Here at long last is the first installation of the Franks Foundation's newsletter and Parole Block Program. Two weeks ago I was attending a crime victims' conference in Reno, where I met a lady named Marcella Leach, a crime victim advocate and mother of a murder victim. It appears that her daughter's killer is coming up for parole next month. What especially broke my heart is that Marcella is of a mature age, and yet here she is desperately trying to keep her daughter's killer locked up. Of all things one may plan to do in your retirement/golden years, fighting a parole board was probably NOT what she had planned on. I promised her mother-to-mother that I would do everything in my power to help her keep this killer locked up. This is why I'm contacting you. Here's the story: In November 1983, Marsalee Nicholas was a senior at the University of California at Santa Barbara, studying to be a teacher of disabled children. However, she never got the chance to do this because she was threatened, stalked and then murdered (shot in the head) by her ex-boyfriend when she refused to reconcile with him. The ex-boyfriend, whose name is Kerry M. Conley was given 17-years-to-life. If this crime were to happen today in California, he would receive Life Without Parole because he had "lain in wait for her." However, because of the way the laws were written at the time this killer was sentenced, he stands an excellent chance of being set free. This is where you can help: PLEASE seriously consider writing a Parole Opposition Letter to Mr. James Davis, Chairman of the California Board of Prison Terms at P.O. Box 4036, Sacramento, California 95818 - BEFORE Aug. 24th. It will only take five minutes of your time and the cost of one stamp to try to keep a monster from being released back into society. Thank you in advance for taking the time to make a difference! Sincerely, Polly Franks, Founder and Executive Director The Franks Foundation P.O.
