Hi, My name is Scott and I am a student from Minnesota. I am currently enrolled in a class about the death penalty and have learned so much about it. I was hoping to hear as many opinions regarding the death penalty as I could. Also I would really like to hear from someone who has been personally affected by it. This could range from co-victim to politician to the family of the person being executed. This would really help me out as it is for a project. Thanks.

The murderer always wins, even if he is executed shortly after killing. The death penalty is the minimum that should be done to a murderer to reduce his winnings.

Can you explain further on that? Are you suggesting some form of torture? Do you think LWOP would be worse? Forcing them to live a terrible life in prison until they die.

I am not suggesting any more harsh form of punishment. Only that there is no excuse for allowing so many murderers to live and to leave prison, where some kill again. My point is that although the death penalty is a most excellent punishment for murder, it does not achieve justice. The murderer always wins, even if promptly executed. That is in contrast to what the foes of the death penalty assert, which is that the death penalty is an injustice to the murderer and that murderers should be treated much better than the murder victims were treated. LWOP is a fraud, foes of the death penalty have admitted as much in writing. The only purpose of pushing for LWOP is to weaken support for the death penalty. Years ago, the Michigan ACLU began its campaign against LWOP in Michigan. Also, international "jurists" have asserted that LWOP is an attack on human rights. In addition, there is a national organization called "The Other Death Penalty", that has begun a campaign against LWOP.

The problem with LWOP is that it doesn't mean what it says. Once it becomes the ultimate, and most expensive penalty, the spotlight eventually moves on to the expense of keeping aged and sick inmates in prison. A murderer can live 50, 60 years in prison, and its impossible to 'guarantee' that laws and political attitudes will stay the same for that long.
Check out my posts about Michigan, its experience with LWOP, and the on-again, off-again practice of its governors granting commutations to LWOP-serving murderers.

I hate the fact that we don't think twice about Americans are dying every day at war and Police officers are being killed in their line of Duty to protect and serve us but when a monster kills let's spend millions keeping him alive.
