Perhaps a strange question, but what happens to the assets of a prisoner who has LWOP or is on a DP sentence, assuming he/she has no wife/husband or children?

Perhaps a strange question, but what happens to the assets of a prisoner who has LWOP or is on a DP sentence, assuming he/she has no wife/husband or children? It's just like Cali said. Of course, if the POS murdered someone and has anything of value, he'll probably be sued for wrongful death under applicable state law. Plus if you don't qualify for a public defender, legal fees can be a bytch. Especially in a capital case where you'll probably take every opportunity to appeal. But you might have enough dough left over to buy a few cases of Raman noodles from the prison commissary. I do know Phil Spector had quite the estate when he went in to serve his sentence of 19 to life. The victim's mother is suing him for wrongful death, and I imagine the punitive damages will be quite high. The trial is set for next January. Here is the copy of the wrongful death complaint in case you are interested how these things look: www.taylorring.com/Spector-complaint.pdf

Thanks for the replies. So these people can continue to make money on the outside, while the state pays for their upkeep. Unfair!

Thanks for the replies. So these people can continue to make money on the outside, while the state pays for their upkeep. Unfair! This is a strange concept in America, but in many other countries, like Mexico & South America, prisoners eat pure slop.....worse than bread & water, and not much of it if the prisoners or their families don't ante up the bucks for better grub. This can be a terrific hardship on the prisoners families.

How do you expect a prisoner to 'pay their way' when they live in a cage? Here is a question-Do you think prisoners should be given food, medical care, or educated in anyway? Should they get any credit whatever for performing jobs in/for the prison and community? I expect not....

This thread goes back to 2011.. but, you would be shocked how much money is in inmates accounts. Majority are fine, especially high profile crimes, or good looking dudes................They do wonders from a cage, which most only sleep in by the way.

Your response dose not really answer my question about your view (if you have one) about rehabilitation.

Tools are there, it depends again on the " individual "as far as rehabilitation.
You will never rehabilitate cold blooded heinous murderers or ped's.

Yep. It is up to the individual.
