Hello, I'm a college student in need of others' opinions concerning the death penalty for a paper. I have just a few questions to be answered and I would like you to answer them as truthfully as possible. It doesn't matter if you are for or against the death penalty, it would actually be better if multiple views are posted. Also, these questions are aimed towards American citizens specifically. Thank you for your time.
1. Do you believe the death penalty is a necessary punishment? For what reason?
2. Would you say that the death penalty in the U.S. is generally a fair punishment for the certain crimes one has committed? Why?
3. What do you believe should be done about the death penalty since there has been a history of people executed and later being proven innocent?

What do you believe should be done about the death penalty since there has been a history of people executed and later being proven innocent? 1. Yes the DP I believe necessary punishment. Why? With a DP the fear of capital punishment will not deter all, but who can say that fear factor being there has not saved lives?? Those found truely/ fairly guilty, have too much opportunity and time to kill again inside if given a life sentence with nothing to lose. And they do.. Many mixed messages when the ACLU also says the DP is the greatest denial fo civil liberty, all life is valuable. The ACLU also fights for the right of women to kill innocent life who cannot defend themselves, to the right to be born. Am I comparing apples and oranges? To me and I am sure others even if subconscience, are devaluating life. Unfortunately against the innocent life, all of it at the end, no life is more valuable except the criminals anymore. Reason life seems in general to be not sacred anymore no wonder we have so many murders.... 2. Yes, I would say the DP is generally a fair punishment one has commited certain cirmes in the US. Why"To recieve the DP it has to be a heinous crime, murder which we now unlike yrs past have much more technology to prove guilt beyond just a reasonable doubt. It take's capital murder to qualify for the DP the highest degree of murder. 3. In past innocent/innocents executed? This is highly unlikely with the technology today and if courts have the DNA etc would be a factor any longer.

Thank you for your time. 1. Do you believe the death penalty is a necessary punishment? For what reason? Yes, it is necessary to prevent the murderer from continuing to enjoy and celebrate his victory over his innocent victim and society as a whole. No. Generally the death penalty is not fair because the murderer is always treated better than the victim. So even in the rare cases where the death penalty is used it remains unfair to the victim and the victim's family and friends. The use of the death penalty makes the outcome less unfair to the victim. Since the death penalty was reinstated there has been no history of anybody being executed and later being proven innocent. Therefore, what should be done is that more murderers should be executed.

What do you believe should be done about the death penalty since there has been a history of people executed and later being proven innocent? #1 for the crime of murder it is essential as it will absolutely gaurantee no further killings by SAID killer. detering others is not the issue, no law or punishment will gaurantee that. #2 can't see that this question is any different than the above, therefore the answer is the same #3 you'll have to define "history". because since 1976, it is unlikely and continues to be highly unlikely given the years of numerous appealls and reviews. but here is a great opportunity for you to tell your professors and classmates that if there is any kind of an issue with innocence the PROBLEM is with the conviction not the punishment. bounce that around.

What do you believe should be done about the death penalty since there has been a history of people executed and later being proven innocent? 1. Do you believe the death penalty is a necessary punishment? For what reason? Yes, I believe it is a necessary punishment. There are many instances in which the crime that was so committed was so cruel, so vile; and the perpetrator intended to kill his or her victim. Those are the cases where the death penalty should be considered. Of course, the death penalty is only reserved for the severest kind of crimes; and in most states, the murder must have been committed in a way that qualifies for the highest degree of murder charge, and also in addition to the prosecutor having to prove the state's case beyond a reasonable doubt; in all of the states that have the death penalty, the state must also prove that at least one aggravating or special circumstance (statutorily defined) existed at the time the murder was committed. 2. Would you say that the death penalty in the U.S. is generally a fair punishment for the certain crimes one has committed? Why? I would have to say yes, but preface that answer with it really depends upon the circumstances that are involved in any one particular case. In cases where the murderer has a long criminal history, and obviously has no intention of being rehabilitated, then the death penalty would be a fair punishment. 3. What do you believe should be done about the death penalty since there has been a history of people executed and later being proven innocent? Since 1976, when the death penalty was reinstated in the United States, there has not been one case of someone who has been executed, then later exonerated of the crime he or she was executed for posthumously. Police work, investigations, and technology have evolved so much over the last half a century or so that it is not very likely that an innocent person will ever be executed.

does the death penalty prevent crime in the u.s First of all, death isn't a penalty. A penalty is something that has to be experienced. However, that having been said, YES, executions prevent the executed from engaging in future criminal acts.

Should the government rape rapists? If not, why not? What's the difference when the government kills killers?

No, some prisoners seem to have a handle on that. Don't bend over to pick up the soap. The rapist can go on with life.
The ones raped but" not murdered, can go on to proms, weddings, all the good things life offers, friends, family etc .
Now with 1st degree murder & say rape too, ending the pos's life is appropriate.

Should the government rape rapists? If not, why not? What's the difference when the government kills killers? Most convicted rapists receive punishment much less preferable to being raped. In that sense the punishment is more draconian than justice would ascribe. As for capital punishment, there is nothing special about it. It's been practiced for thousands of years.

Your scenario had nothing to do with the DP. Simple take a life nothing is left for the vicitm, rape something is left for both. The ultimate has been reached they took from another & in too many cases they took too many lives.

Simple take a life nothing is left for the vicitm, rape something is left for both. So if those who take everything deserve to have everything taken, why don't those who take without consent deserve to be taken without consent? Why aren't you consistent?

Why do those who get their license suspended for driving under the influence lose their rights to drive? Or should we ask for their consent to take his/her license away? Who's running the shop?
Punishment should escalate to fit the offense. Needing their consent means we would have no laws at all.

I was not suggesting that we secure the consent of the criminal to submit to the punishment. It's no wonder you get upset when you completely misunderstand what you're reading.

Oh I am very consistent, stubborn too. You stubbornly refuse to learn English, I'll give you that. Jokes aside, given that you were raised in Illinois, I am genuinely intrigued by why you only have a language learner's grasp of English. I want to find a way to ask you about this, but I think you will assume I am being a smart ass.

Native American, many do not fear death or consider it to be a punishment. Just a change of worlds. When the DP is applied it should be a quick death & only used when one is found guilty beyond a doubt.

Should the government rape rapists? If not, why not? By the way Bernard, what I do have is,a great memory. Back when I was fairly new here, ( I know by your statements you like going thru the archives) I asked on a DP thread why do we not rape rapist. Some members quickly got pissed. Then someone said, wait she has a legit question. Was that copied from my past posting? Sure seems like it.

However, I don't recall where I first heard the comparison between killing killers and raping rapists. I remember a long thread about it back when I was the puppeteer for Friendly Honky. I might have learned it from you back then.

That question just proves the DP is not, as some anti's use in debates( an eye for an eye )mentality or out of revenge). If that were true we would rape rapist etc etc. And we would not have different degrees of murder. etc etc
