A spouse (with some exceptions) cannot be compelled to testify against a spouse. Should this privilege be extented to cover those who are not married but have lived together for a significant period of time?

In Germany you don't have to testify against the person you're engaged with. So, what happens right before the trial when your spouse knows something that should not be heard in court? Yes, you get engaged. This is of course somehow ridiculous but the laws are from 1900 when the engagement still meant something. Besides you also don't have to testify against any near family member.
