Wether we're for or against death penalty, little is said of those who are performing the ultimate act of giving death in society's name.
Executioners have lived as outcasts throughout history, and even today most of them remain mostly anonymous for self-protection.
I'd like to hear your opinions on the matter. As the thread goes on, I'll also share my insights with those who would like to read them.

I suspect that most executioners are honest, hardworking citizens who are looking to make a difference in an era of declining moral standards. These men and women seek to create a better world for our children, and the believe in truth, justice, and the American way. Indeed, many of them work late hours and 2nd jobs to make ends meet, yet they happily show up on time to do the righteous deed. God bless our nation's executioners, and God bless capital punishment. Also, God bless the boys on the tie-down team. From the guy who drives the death van to the nurse who taps the vein on the gurney, let it be acknowledged that they are all American heroes who break their backs to bring justice to the People. So tonight when you are at the bar with your friends, be sure to raise a glass and say a toast to the folks on the front lines who make it all happen

In Britain of old a lot of executioners were outcasts but a lot were local heroes too. One of my house windows looks over to Pensarn hill where they had the local scaffold which sent hundreds to eternity. Its a well respected site still. In fact one my local pubs still has bits from it in glass cases. Its quite sobering to look at whilst drinking actually

Wow, a first reply by no one else but the impressive Agaveman in person! Thank you!
I agree that these people are hired to perform a duty that is most of the times unwanted, even by some who are in favor of death penalty. In that sense, the American protocol has made things easier on them, as it is now a staff who is sharing the task instead of one single person... even if, in the end, only one of them presses the button to inject the deadly cocktail.
For ten years I have studied the repercussions such a profession mifght have on an individual, through my medieval character and yes, they are heroes in their own way. To kill another person is nothing to be taken lightly, even if it is a murderer.
That being said, I'd be honored to invite an executioner to the bar for a happy hour! God knows they must need a bit of cheering up.
Andie, forgive my ignorance, but what is COs?

thebroker: how fortunate you are to live in a place so filled with history! It must indeed be soberting yes, but then again, I'd have a crazy tendancy to celebrate life even more in a place like that.

A CO is a Corrections Officer, that is my job title and profession. I am not sure who does the final act in Texas but I will see if I can find out.

Corrections Officers are not guards. Guards walk in shopping malls. Officers are very well trained people that work a very demanding beat. And my hat is off to all of them.

Pleased to meet you, D.E.E., and many thanks for... being cute in Andie's stead!
It's a very good thing to have you on this forum, as you are so well placed to voice opinions and to inform us in a constructive way.
Eric, I love your second quote at the bottom of your message!

AZ uses two people for each of its drugs in the cocktail (one line flows harmlessly to a waste basket) so neither of them knows who sent the fatal dosage.
When we switched from the electric chair and lethal gas to Lethal injection, the executioner's role became very limited. Now, all one has to do is fill the syringes. I am expecting the executioner to be eventually replaced by a machine that can disburse the lethal drugs.

I think so too, Felix. It's unacceptable that Joe didn't congratulate you. You made any possible effort to improve him as a human being. You deserve respect and gratitude from him. Ok, he doesn't look as good as you do and his success regarding women is pathetic compared to yours. Maybe that's the biggest thorn in his flesh. Who knows? I sincerely ask you to debate this topic in a different thread to show how much he hurt you. Shame on him! eu.ro

It was invented by a gentleman named Fred Leuchter. He's a so-called expert on execution methods. He's rebuilt electric chairs, refurbished gas chambers, and sold execution equipment to prisons across the country. Illinois (when it was carrying out executions) and Missouri both used Leuchter's lethal injection machines during recent executions and there were technical/mechanical difficulties to such an extent that both states reverted back to manual injection of the lethal drugs. During one Illinois execution, the syringes that were loaded into a dispensing apparatus which is connected to the computerized control console of the Leuchter device, pushed the chemicals out too fast into the IV tubes that they clogged (during John Wayne Gacy's). Leuchter for the most part has been discredited as an expert over the years because of his rather vociferous comments about the gas chambers that were used during the Holocaust in Germany.
