Virginia Tech victims:
Jarrett Lane
Jarrett Lane, from Narrows, Va., was a senior majoring in civil engineering. In a posting on MSNBC.com, Jessica Green wrote that "the small but very close community of Narrows, VA lost a dear friend and an amazing guy. Jarrett Lane was a very humble and down-to-earth guy and there couldn't have been any sweeter person to have a conversation with. Our small town is feeling the effects of this heinous crime that took place just 20 minutes away."
Jocelyne Couture-Nowak
French language teacher and former Montreal resident, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. She taught at Virginia Tech along with her husband, Jerzy Nowak, a horticulture professor.
Jeremy Herbstritt Herbstritt was of Johnstown, Penn., according to WJAC-TV. A graduate student in engineering, he had received his bachelor's degree from Penn State, WJAC reported.
Juan Ortiz Graduate Student, Civil Engineering
Leslie Sherman Sophomore, History and International Studies
Henry Lee Roanoke, Va., Freshman, Computer Engineering
Erin Peterson Student from Centreville, Va.
Brian Bluhm Graduate student in Civil Engineering
Caitlin Hammaren Hammaren, 19, of Westtown, N.Y., was a sophomore majoring in international studies and French, according to officials at her former school district.
"She was just one of the most outstanding young individuals that I've had the privilege of working with in my 31 years as an educator," said John P. Latini, principal of Minisink Valley High School, where she graduated in 2005. "Caitlin was a leader among our students."
Minisink Valley students and teachers shared their grief Tuesday at a counseling center set up in the school, Latini said.
Ross Abdallah Alameddine Alameddine, 20, of Saugus, Mass., was a sophomore who had just declared English as his major.
Friends created a memorial page on Facebook.com that described Alameddine as "an intelligent, funny, easygoing guy."
"You're such an amazing kid, Ross," wrote Zach Allen, who along with Alameddine attended Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Mass. "You always made me smile, and you always knew the right thing to do or say to cheer anyone up."
Alameddine was killed in the classroom building, according to Robert Palumbo, a family friend who answered the phone at the Alameddine residence Tuesday.
Alameddine's mother, Lynnette Alameddine said she was outraged by how victims' relatives were notified of the shooting.
"It happened in the morning and I did not hear (about her son's death) until a quarter to 11 at night," she said. "That was outrageous. Two kids died, and then they shoot a whole bunch of them, including my son."

Virgiia Tech victims: Liviu Librescu, Professor, Holocaust Survivor, Hero A 76-year-old professor who survived the Holocaust was shot to death while saving his students from the Virginia Tech assailant, students said. Liviu Librescu, an internationally respected aeronautics engineer who taught at Virginia Tech for 20 years, saved the lives of several students by barricading his classroom door before he was gunned down in the massacre, according to e-mail accounts sent by students to his wife. "My father blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee," his son, Joe Librescu, said in a telephone interview from his home outside of Tel Aviv. "Students started opening windows and jumping out." He was killed on Yam Ha Shoah (Holocaust Rememberance day). (thank you Heidi for remembering this ironic and sad fact) Kevin Granata, Professor Engineering science and mechanics professor Granata and his students researched muscle and reflex response and robotics. Granata served in the military and later conducted orthopedic research in hospitals before coming to Virginia Tech. The head of the school's engineering science and mechanics department called Granata one of the top five biomechanics researchers in the country working on movement dynamics in cerebral palsy. Engineering professor Demetri P. Telionis said Granata was successful and kind. "With so many research projects and graduate students, he still found time to spend with his family, and he coached his children in many sports and extracurricular activities," Telionis said. "He was a wonderful family man. We will all miss him dearly."

I must join Shelli in saying that I do not often cry over things I read on the net, but this thread... man...
My heart goes out to all who loved and lost, and to all the victims.

So sad and I've got 2 kids in college which makes me worry all the more about the safety of college campuses. I was a freshman at UT back in 1972 and I remember walking by that tower, staring up at it, remembering what Charles Whitman did. I remember picking up my pace on occasion because I'd feel afraid. Sadly, there will always be nutcases who decide to kill themselves but try to murder as many people as they can beforehand. Why??? Is it attention? It's so senseless and evil that I can't wrap my head around it. I guess when you combine crazy & mean this is what you get. I'm just glad he followed through with killing himself so we're spared the spectacle that his trial would have become........Lisa

I haven't been on this site in such a long time. This thread was a wonderful idea Euro.
In loving memory of:
Jennifer Corbin Dorothy "Dolly" Hearn
Both woman were killed by a controlling maniac who was threatened by the women who were trying to cut off their relationships with him.
Jennifer was married to Barton Corbin when she was shot in the head and it was made to look like a suicide. Her young son found her lifeless body.
Dolly Hearn was killed 19 years earlier by the same man. Dolly had dated Bart Corbin while attending dental school. He staged her murder to look like a suicide also.
My respect and admiration to all of the law enforcement officers who worked many hours to bring justice for these two victims.
