In 2000, Smith was convicted in Madison County for the November 1994 murder of a convenience store clerk during an early morning robbery. He and two others were charged with capital murder in the killing. Smith was 23 at the time of his arrest in December 1994.
A jury found Smith guilty but recommended a sentence of life in prison. However, the judge rejected the jury's recommendation, instead sentencing Smith to death.
Not sure if this will go through. The last sentence above probably provides grounds for appeal, plus Tommy Arthur appealed the drug protocol last month and won a reprieve.

Some 5+ hours later after several appeals, Smith has been executed. He had fried chicken as a last meal.
Alabama executed Ronald Smith Jr. late Thursday for the 1994 murder of a convenience store clerk — a death sentence imposed by a judge despite the jury’s recommendation of a life sentence.
Smith’s execution lasted more than 30 minutes, and he “heaved and coughed through about 13 minutes.”
“heaved and coughed through about 13 minutes.” DP opponents will jump onto this!

As a pro DP, it is insane to have 5 hours of last minute appeals, not the 13 minutes.

As I see it, there are several disturbing problems With this. 1: The judge overruled the jury With a Death sentence. The fact that this is possible at all, is disturbing. 2: How carefully can you handle an appeal in 5 hours? If the time pressure meant an unfair treatment, that's a huge problem. 3: The "consciousness tests" seems ridiculous, to say the least. Given the fact that barbiturast can often mask pain reactions, an EEG would be the obvious solution.

They could not handle it thru the 22 yrs with appeals? Guess it is ok though, if only one jury member can keep someone from getting the DP, with there being 12 on the jury. 4 liberal justices would have halted the execution, but 5 were needed. Leave your last statement for the professionals to answer that. Ass uming to fit your argument is not worth a chit, it is only your wishful agenda.

The judge overruled the jury With a Death sentence. The fact that this is possible at all, is disturbing. It's disturbing that either has a say in sentencing. Sentencing should be determined as a matter of law, not personal opinion. The "consciousness tests" seems ridiculous, to say the least. Given the fact that barbiturast can often mask pain reactions, an EEG would be the obvious solution. You have a point there. The French never had that problem when they were beheading convicts.

Just this year I had two who died from natural causes, & they suffered much longer than 30 or 13 minutes. Good people who worked hard & never harmed anyone.
Just this year in the news a man was found decapitated in his truck, another found in a field beaten & decapitated, innocent victims. A female burned to death thrown on the side of the road in a remote area. Three thugs held up a women unloading her car with a 7 yr old & a 4yr old in the car as she was unloading grocery at their apartment. Thugs shot all three, even the kids, the 4 yr old died.
Personally, I could care less if a murderer took 13 mins to die, or if conscience. He had an easy quick way out. For a good reason.
