A Tyler man who was sentenced to die for the 2001 robbery and murder of a 75-year-old auto mechanic has had an execution date set in June.
Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham said State 114th District Judge Christy Kennedy set the execution date for Gregory Russeau, 45, for June 18 at 6 p.m. during a hearing Friday.
Russeau was convicted for fatally beating 75-year-old James Syvertson, of Flint, at his repair shop on Vine Street.
Russeau was arrested in the mechanic’s car the next day in Longview.
The trial revealed he has been in and out of jail since 1988 and his crimes included burglaries and a rash of vehicle thefts.
Russeau had appealed the conviction and sentence saying that prosecutors had planted evidence against him, but the 5th U.S. Court of Appeals tossed out the appeal.
