The DP disappears in civilized nations not because someone comes up with a definitive argument against it, but because people simply don't have the time and energy to devote to supporting something that they barely care about. The lack of activity on this board pretty much illustrates the point. This is supposed to be the hotbed of DP support in this nation, yet it's as dead as a freshly juiced inmate.

One's presence here is hardly an indicator of one's level of support for the death penalty. And besides, the USA is a civilized nation, but the death penalty isn't going anywhere. Kill a federal law enforcement officer in any one of the fifty states or the District of Columbia, and you are eligible for the gurney at Terre Haute. That's not going to change, even if a couple of states here and there give it up for state crimes. They will rejoin the fold when they get tired of the increased murder rate.

I've been almost ten years. This board has never been a "hotbed" of anything. The desuetude of this forum mirrors the desuetude of the death penalty, which has been in steady decline for forty years. People don't care about capital punishment because they don't care about murder.

But that doesn't seem to happen. Western nations ban the DP and never go back. States in the US are killing murderers in ever decreasing numbers. The trend is only one way.

When a DJ says the N word on the radio, hell is unleashed and we hear about it for weeks. But when somebody gets murdered, it barely makes the news. The forum used to be quite active though.

Murder has become so common place, every day happening all over the world. The only one's protected & treated with dignity is" we all know who by now. I agree with Bernard, use the n word & all hell breaks loose. Scream rape decades later to the public it is automatically gullty as charged no facts needed. Throw bacon at the police & call them pigs. Burn the place down. Kill two police officers in NY. A psycho in another country treatening the U.S censoring what movie's we can watch. I went to see the movie if for no other reason than to say f-u.

I joined here in 1998 - then this board was lively indeed. I remember frequent posters such as Alan Cohen, Lynne, Das, Aku, and many more. I think I remember Matthew from long ago. Executions were celebrated and some posters did countdowns until the condemned was declared dead. But as the years have passed, the apetite for the death penalty executions is fading. Thats good news. Best wishes Nils. Yours truly

Funny you should say this now. I'm chatting on Facebook with an ex-pro member of this forum who is saying his enthusiasm for the dp just isn't there any more, and he suspects that's why a lot of people have left the board. Values change, I guess.

Values change, I guess. That the apetite for the Executions os fading is without doubt. The question is to what extent support for DP also is in a long term decline. It certainly seems like it, and we might be sliding into a situation similar to pre 1980. The support is also dependent on how the question is phrased. When the LWOP is given as an option! I think The support goes to close to 50 percent. Best. Nils.
