Judge rules woman competent for executionConvicted Harris County killer Suzanne Basso, condemned for the stomping murder of a mentally disabled man to claim his life insurance benefits, moved a step closer to the death house Wednesday as a judge found her competent to be executed. Judge Mary Lou Keel of the 232nd State District Court formally announced her decision Wednesday, although she had indicated at the Dec. 13 competency hearing that she likely would rule in favor of prosecutors. The finding indicates that Basso knows that she is to be executed and understands the reason for the sentence. Basso, 59, is to be put to death on Feb. 5. for the 1998 murder of Louis "Buddy" Musso, also 59. She would be the fifth woman executed in Texas since the state resumed executions in 1982. Basso's attorney, Winston Cochran, could not be immediately reached for comment. He has said, however, that he will appeal a ruling adverse to his client. In Basso's trial, testimony indicated she had lured Musso to Texas with the promise of marriage. Once here, she lead a group of five others in kicking, beating and stomping the man to death www.beaumontenterprise.com/news/article/Judge-rules-woman-competent-for-execution-5145733.php

Hopefully the courts/judge will stand firm on the execution.
What she did was degrading to human dignity. She inflicted on to him by stomping & especially the torture of, to a man who was " mentally" disabled. Just for his life insurance benefits.

I'm very pleased and glad for the good news. If only this one was happening in ALL the death penalty states, no doubts, our world would have been a much better place to live.

Now, how cruel and usual would it be to have her kicked to death as well? Since she "competent" (whatever the hell they mean by that) to face her punishment, is it also very obvious that she knew and understood what she did when she killed that man, AND how she had it done. How can she ever object to having the crap kicked out of her as well?

Courts reject 3 Suzanne Basso appeals as death date approachesFebruary 3, 2014 State and federal courts Monday rejected appeals claiming that convicted killer Suzanne Basso, set to die Wednesday for the 1998 bashing murder of a mentally handicapped man, doesn't understand she will be executed or why and therefore cannot be put to death under state law. The appeals seeking to overrule a January finding by 232nd state District Judge Mary Lou Keel that Basso is competent were filed with the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District ? Houston Division. The Austin based appeals court also rejected a petition asserting that former Harris County Medical Examiner Dr. Paul Shrode's testimony at Basso's trial was imprecise in regarding the victim's cause of death. A clemency petition remains active before the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. Basso, 59, was condemned for the August 1998 torture-murder of Louis "Buddy" Musso, 59, whom she lured to Texas with a promise of marriage. Prosecutors said the New Jersey man had the intellect of a 7-year-old child. Basso and her five accomplices, all of whom are serving prison terms, killed the man in order to claim life insurance benefits, prosecutors said. Musso's body was found beside a Harris County road with extensive injuries including multiple broken ribs and a fractured skull. www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Courts-reject-3-Suzanne-Basso-appeals-as-death-5200847.php

2 courts won't block woman's execution in Texas Monday, February 3, 2014 HOUSTON (AP) — A federal judge has joined Texas' top criminal court in refusing to stop this week's scheduled execution of a woman condemned for the torture slaying of a mentally impaired man more than 15 years ago outside Houston. U.S. District Judge Sim Lake on Monday turned down an appeal from 59-year-old Suzanne Basso hours after Texas Court of Criminal Appeals rejected a similar appeal. She's set for lethal injection Wednesday evening in Huntsville. Basso's attorney contends she is mentally incompetent for execution for the slaying of 59-year-old Louis "Buddy" Musso. Additional appeals to delay her punishment are likely headed into the federal appeals courts. Basso would be the 14th woman executed in the U.S. and the fifth in Texas since the Supreme Court in 1976 allowed capital punishment to resume. www.beaumontenterprise.com/news/texas/article/2-courts-won-t-block-woman-s-execution-in-Texas-5200766.php

I am always a strong supporter in equal rights - this should count as well for the capital punishment . It appears to me that there is a certain reluctance to execute females - it was in history - and is now !

Which one? Associated Press When capital murder defendant Suzanne Basso showed up for court, there was no certainty which Suzanne Basso would appear. "She would pretend to be different things," recalled Colleen Barnett, who prosecuted Basso for the torture slaying of a mentally impaired man near Houston more than 15 years ago. "One setting she would pretend to be blind. One setting she would pretend she couldn't walk. One setting she had the voice of a little girl." I agree. This woman needs to be put down.

Suzanne Basso, Texas Woman, Facing Execution For Killing Of Louis 'Buddy' MussoHUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — When capital murder defendant Suzanne Basso showed up for court, there was no certainty which Suzanne Basso would appear. "She would pretend to be different things," recalled Colleen Barnett, who prosecuted Basso for the torture slaying of a mentally impaired man near Houston more than 15 years ago. "One setting she would pretend to be blind. One setting she would pretend she couldn't walk. One setting she had the voice of a little girl. "I don't know how to describe her." On Wednesday, Basso, 59, is scheduled to be put to death for the 1998 slaying of 59-year-old Louis "Buddy" Musso. Executions of women are rare. Basso would be only the 14th woman executed in the U.S. and the fifth in Texas since the Supreme Court in 1976 allowed the death penalty to resume. Since then, nearly 1,400 male inmates have been put to death nationwide, 505 of them in Texas. Basso's lawyer argued that she is not mentally competent enough to face execution because she suffers from delusions, and that the state statute governing competency was unconstitutionally flawed. He also challenged the legality of a medical examiner's testimony. A state judge last month ruled that Basso had a history of fabricating stories about herself, sought attention and manipulated psychological tests. One psychiatrist indicated additional testing over an extended period of time "would provide a more reliable evaluation," attorney Winston Cochran said in a federal court filing. "Why rush to judgment on Basso?" he asked, seeking a punishment delay that was refused Monday by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and a federal judge. He took his appeals Tuesday to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, one step short of the Supreme Court. At the competency hearing, Basso testified from a hospital bed wheeled into a Houston courtroom and talked about a snake smuggled into a prison hospital in an attempt to kill her. Cochran said a degenerative disease has left her paralyzed. Basso contended her paralysis was the result of a jail beating years ago. At the hearing, she acknowledged representations about her background — that she was a triplet, worked in the New York governor's office, had a relationship with Nelson Rockefeller — were untrue. She originally was from the Albany and Schenectady areas of New York. At her trial, Basso was portrayed as the ringleader of a group of people who fatally tortured Musso to steal his money. Musso, who was mentally impaired but cared for himself, had met either Basso or her son at a church carnival in New Jersey. He left there to move in with her in Jacinto City, just east of Houston. "She lured him to Texas with the idea they'd get married," Barnett said. (She had no delusions when she lured him to Texas which proves she knew full well what she was doing.)
Evidence showed that she already was married, made herself the beneficiary of insurance policies purchased for Musso and took over his Social Security benefits. Five others, including Basso's son, also were convicted for Musso's death. Prosecutors sought the death penalty only for Basso. Court documents detailed extensive abuse Musso endured days before his body was found in a ditch by a jogger. He'd been bathed in a solution of bleach and pine cleaner and scrubbed with a wire brush. An autopsy showed he had at least 17 cuts to his head, 28 cuts and cigarette burns on his back, bruises all over his body, a skull fracture, a fractured bone in his neck, 14 broken ribs and two dislocated vertebrae. "It was just horrible, horrible, horrible," Barnett said. "When you talk about the death penalty, what the death penalty was made for, it was for a case like this." Basso told police in a written statement that she drove Musso's body to the dump site. She became a suspect after reporting Musso missing in an apparent attempt to distance herself from his slaying once his body was discovered. None of the eight other women on Texas death row has an execution date. www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/04/suzanne-basso-execution-texas_n_4724683.html

I think it's a disgrace that it took 15 years to kill this skank. Now, get on with it. Almost midnight here. Booze is finished, hot as hell, can't find good music and I'm dog tired. If the U.S. would juice killers as fast as they'd bomb crazy arabs, I'd be a much happier person.

I hardly sitting 15 years on death row is rushing to judgment, but being her attorney I know that is his job. What I have a problem with is others weeping over her death. She's lived long enough and in my opinion 15 years longer than necessary.
