Proposition 34, repeal of the DP and commutation to LWOP for all current death row prisoners, is on the ballot today. I'm on the way to the polls shortly to vote "no" on repeal (of course). Results will begin to post at this link after about 8 PM California time. Let's all hope that the DP is retained. vote.sos.ca.gov/

A victory for democracy. I wonder why European countries never put the question of the death penalty to the people.

Repeal of the DP failed again, about 53/47. Glad to see that it did not pass, but wow those are scary numbers because it is narrow. I hope it does not go the other way the next time around

Maybe a lot of no votes came from disillusionment with the system

Maybe a lot of no votes came from disillusionment with the system Many here consider the financial argument compelling. This is a high-tax state (that just raised taxes again) and they see it as a practical matter if it's not going to be used.

That makes sense. Too bad they do not figure out how to execute like VA, Texasor now South Dakota. If there is a streamlined appeals process unlike the cumbersome processes that Cali and Nevada have then they can make DP cheaper. People like Scott Peterson won't see a needle connected to their arm for another ten years in your state. With streamlined appeals, we can turn death row into an efficient assembly line process.

I just read that there are only 14 people on California DR that have completed their appeals. Unbelievable.

I just read that there are only 14 people on California DR that have completed their appeals. Unbelievable. A lot of that is outright collusion by the federal bench, i.e., the 9th circuit court of appeals. Justices there simply sit on appeals for years. There is no federal time limit on how long a justice or the court can take to consider the appeal.

A victory for democracy. I wonder why European countries never put the question of the death penalty to the people. I assume that's a rhetorical question...

Thank god. There I was thinking their new death chamber would never get used. Even then it will probably still never get used.

Many here consider the financial argument compelling. This is a high-tax state (that just raised taxes again) and they see it as a practical matter if it's not going to be used. Many conservatives I know in CA were swayed by this and told me they voted to repeal the DP. Since I don't believe you should put a price on justice, I voted "NO" and was pleased to be on the winning side. The system is obviously broken, but fixes are there if we are prepared to implement them.

This is hardly an issue unless the state of California actually start executing people - then we have a problem. They could have fixed this once and for all by repeal, but unfortunately killing people seemed more important than common sense.

Now that we have a new death chamber, start asking scumbags whether they want the gas or the needle.

There is a Tracy Petrocelli on Nevada death row for over 30 years he us waiting for the poison hah! He was converted to life in this case. Thanks to the wisdom (sarcasm) of the 9th Circuit. Multiple victims who go unnamed as they were never found or cases prosecuted. 1982 is a long time to be a member of his victims club. Here's to all those who disappeared and and names are known only to the families and law enforcement.
