Murdered this week...in our communities
Post by admin on Sept 7, 2007, 10:02am

I'd like to try something and I'm curious how quickly this thread would grow. We have an incredible range of geographic locations among the members of this board. I'm asking you to scan your local news web sites and simply post the name and location of people who were murdered in your community this week.

Regardless of your stance on the issue of capital punishment, the number of murders occurring on a daily basis across the world is staggering and sobering.

You can post the date of the murder in the body of the post and a link to the news article if you like, or any additional information including a photo if available. Please include simply their name, age (if available) and location in the subject line.

Use a separate post for each case.

Please respect the intent of this thread and do not use this thread to make a political statement about the war. Please do not list soldiers killed in battle here.

Death row inmates are not murder victims and do not belong here.

Edited to add: We should post just the basic info about the case in the thread, rather than a complete news article. I don't want to duplicate what already occurs in the News Articles forums. Let's just include a synopsis of what is known about the murder at this time, and a link to the article for those who want further details.

Xavier Butler, 27, Jacksonville, FL
Post by kma367 on Sept 12, 2007, 6:30pm

Jacksonville Police are searching for a killer tonight. Someone shot three men, in the parking lot of a hotel. One of the people drawn to the shooting by the sound of bullets was a soldier, who recently returned from Iraq. "With seeing people laying down there it brought back memories for me back in february when I lost six soldiers, seven soldiers actually," said Todd Miller. But this scene was a long way from the war in Iraq. It happened in a Jacksonville hotel parking lot. Although the shooting brought back painful memories, Todd Miller didn't let it keep him from helping out three men shot while sitting in a car outside of room 133. "The people that were there did not know how to do CPR so I jumped in and helped give mouth to mouth while the other guy was pumping, we worked on him for about five or ten minutes," said Miller. That man died, two others were taken to the hospital, one was in very critical condition. Witnesses told Jacksonville Police the shooter drove off in a blue Chevy Impala or Caprice. Investigators now say that man is 27 year old Xavier Butler. What they don't know is what prompted the shooting. "We're not even sure whether the victims knew the suspect, they're all local from here in jacksonville," said Lt. Martin Cass with Jacksonville Police.

A woman was charged with murder Saturday in the stabbing death of her ex-girlfriend's new lover in southwest Houston. Shirley Ann Jefferson, 24, confessed to her ex-girlfriend that she'd stabbed the woman Friday evening at the Bayou West Condominium Community in the 9800 block of Clear Creek. The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, had recently started dating Jefferson's ex-girlfriend. All three women lived at the complex. The stabbing took place at a neighbor's apartment, where the victim had gone to use the phone around 5 p.m. Friday. "A few minutes later, while she was on the phone in a bedroom, (Jefferson) walked in and started stabbing her," said Sgt. J.C. Padilla of Houston Police Department's homicide division. Jefferson stabbed the victim multiple times before leaving the apartment. "It was a pretty bloody scene," said officer A. Ibarra, Padilla's partner. The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Shortly after the stabbing, Jefferson's ex-girlfriend "saw the police and ambulance and was told what had happened," Padilla said. "Later, she went and talked to the suspect and the suspect confessed to her and told her she loved her." Jefferson was taken into custody at the complex after a witness identified her to officers, he said. She is being held in a Harris County jail, where her bail is set at $50,000. Neighbor Ashley Mitchell, 15, said she saw Jefferson "acting crazy" in the parking lot shortly after the stabbing. "She was yelling and screaming and she took her pants off," Mitchell said. Ten people murdered in Detroit since Saturday

DETROIT -- Police responding to reports of shots being fired last night found a grisly scene in which four people were shot to death and a fifth was clinging to life.

The murders bring the death toll in the city to 10 since Saturday, Detroit Police said.

Killed in the Monday night attack on the 19000 block of Runyon Street near State Fair Street were a 25-year-old woman and three men aged 33, 20 and 22 years old, Detroit Police said.

The surviving victim, a 30-year-old woman was taken to an area hospital where she was listed in critical condition, police said.

Police believe three men in dark clothing committed the shootings inside the home, but did not have better descriptions of the men.

A large amount of what investigators believe is marijuana was found in the home, police said. The drugs could be a motive for the shooting, police said.

On Monday a 43-year-old man and his 18-year-old son were found shot to death in a home at 14874 Tuller, police said.

Four people were shot Sunday on Walton Street as they played cards on the porch of a home, Detroit Police said. A man with a shotgun opened fire and killed one of the men and sent the other three to an area hospital with injuries. One man was in critical and the other two in temporary serious condition, police said.

Also Sunday, a man was fatally shot while on the 9300 block of Livernois, Detroit Police said.

On Saturday a man was fatally shot at a coney island on Holbrook and another man killed in an unrelated shooting at East Seven Mile Road and Schoenherr Street, Detroit Police said.

KEN PROCTOR and his mates should have been at Sylvania Bowls Club last night sinking a schooner or two. He might have talked proudly of his new grand-daughter, born only a month ago. But the 66-year-old's chair was empty last night following his death, apparently after the most trivial dispute imaginable - over the watering of his lawn. He was hosing his large front lawn just after 5pm on Wednesday when Todd Munter, walking past Mr Proctor's brick two-storey house on Formosa Street, Sylvania, allegedly accused him of violating water restrictions. Even though Mr Proctor was in the clear - hand-held hose watering is permitted on Wednesdays and Sundays before 10am and after 4pm - Munter persisted, the two argued and, police allege, Mr Proctor turned the hose on the 36-year-old. That was when Munter took a spat over water use far beyond the pale, viciously attacking Mr Proctor, police say. He punched Mr Proctor, then pushed him over and kicked him while he lay on the ground, police allege. At some point during the attack Mr Proctor suffered what ambulance officers called a massive cardiac arrest. Mr Proctor, the father to a son and daughter, retired in 2002 to his large house, where he lived with his wife, Lynn, his daughter and her husband. Only a month ago he had become a grandfather when his daughter gave birth to a girl.

She fell dead in her office, just steps away from the front desk. Then, a black man in his early to mid-20s entered the hotel, which then was called Fairfield Inn, about 2:20 a.m. and said his car had broken down, police said. He asked a 50-year-old female clerk whether he could wait in the lobby until someone came to pick him up. After 20 minutes, he brandished a small-caliber handgun and stole the clerk’s 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix. Police have not apprehended the man.

One for the Recidivist killers archive

Fourteen years ago, Stanley Francis Maguire shot and killed John Vickers's father. Now Mr Vickers, a father himself, cannot believe it has happened to someone else. Maguire, 59, has been on the run for three days after allegedly shooting dead his neighbour, Stephen Holmes, after the father of four told him to be quiet. The man he had killed was John Thomas Vickers, who, like Mr Holmes, was a miner. Yesterday, Mr Vickers's distressed son, John - now 31 - told the Herald it should not have been allowed to happen twice. Mr Holmes's four daughters will suffer the pain he has lived with for 14 years. "They're going to feel worse knowing that the justice system let this bloke out after eight years and he did it again," said Mr Vickers, a father of two. In March 26, 1993, Maguire ran over Mr Vickers with an F100 truck in the car park at Doyalson RSL, on the Central Coast, and then shot him while he was on the ground. Maguire was charged with murder, but in 1994 a jury convicted him of manslaughter after debate over whether the gun fired accidentally. He was released from prison in 2002, and his parole ended two years.

Mexican national held in slaying of 24-year-old man

By DIANE SMITH
Star-Telegram staff writer
A 27-year-old Mexican national was in police custody Saturday night, hours after a 24-year-old man was fatally stabbed, police reported.
Officers found the victim about 3 a.m. Saturday in the front yard of a house in the 1300 block of West Fogg Street, said Lt. Dean Sullivan, a police spokesman.
The victim had been stabbed during an argument with an acquaintance, investigators learned. The man died at John Peter Smith Hospital, Sullivan said.
Witnesses helped officers locate the suspect, and police and members of the Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team set up surveillance near a house while homicide detectives obtained a warrant, Sullivan said.
"The suspect was observed loading a van with a suitcase and bags," Sullivan said. "It appeared he was in the process of fleeing."
The suspect, who was not carrying a driver's license and is not a U.S. citizen, remained in custody Saturday facing a murder charge, Sullivan said. Police didn't release the name of the victim or the suspect.

Combined with three other direct calls to Geraldton police station, north of Perth, which raised concerns about the escalating violence at Sunset Beach that night, the family of William Rowe made a total of nine calls asking for police or medical assistance.

It is understood the quality of information in some of the calls may have been affected because the callers were under duress.

Star-Telegram Staff Writers
Sarah Said was an avid tennis player known as a silly but bright student. Her 18-year-old sister, Amina Said, was often called "the girl with pretty eyes," friends say.

The girls were well-liked and made good grades at Lewisville High School. Their father was strict and rarely let them spend time with friends. When Sarah, 17, recently met a boy at her job, she told a friend that her father would kill her if he found out.

Friends are now rethinking the way they understood that turn of phrase.

The Said sisters were fatally shot Tuesday evening in their father's taxi in Irving, police said. A capital murder warrant has been issued for their father, Yaser Abdel Said, who is accused of killing both girls.

4 kids believed thrown from Ala. bridge

http://tinyurl.com/2xm8jg

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. - Search crews in boats resumed looking Thursday for the bodies of four young children while a judge denied bond for their father, who is accused of throwing them from an 80-foot coastal bridge.

Boats went back into waters around the Dauphin Island bridge early Thursday, though heavy fog kept divers and helicopters on hold.

Lam Luong, 37, was charged with four counts of capital murder in the death of the children, who range in age from 4 months to 3 years, after he broke down and confessed, authorities said Wednesday.

District Judge Charles McKnight denied bond Thursday morning, describing the allegations as "heinous."

Luong's court-appointed attorney, Joe Kulakowski, was conferring with him and not immediately available for comment.

District Attorney John Tyson Jr. declined to discuss details of the case.

Authorities believe Luong threw the children from the bridge after an argument with his wife, but they gave no details on what the dispute was about. Luong had a crack cocaine possession charge pending in Georgia, and his wife's brother-in-law described Luong as a drug addict.

The search for the bodies had been halted Wednesday afternoon when the dense fog rolled in and obscured the bridge, a three-mile span over the Intracoastal Waterway. Authorities held out little hope of finding them.

While some friends and family members maintained hope the children remain alive, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran said searchers were "in the recovery stage at this point."

Luong's wife, 23-year-old Kieu Ngoc Phan, discovered the children were missing Monday and went with Luong to the police, Tyson said. Luong initially told them the children were with his girlfriend from New York in a hotel in Gulfport, Miss., and that she had failed to return them, according to family members and authorities.

Based in part on a witness's account, investigators said the children were thrown from the highest part of the two-lane span Monday morning, a point about 80 feet above the waterway. The channel below that part of the bridge has a depth of 55 feet.

Phan's brother-in-law, Kam Phengsisomboun, said he was told that a witness saw someone throw a bundle from the bridge and then saw three children in a nearby car. Tyson said there was a witness but declined to give details.

Luong came to the United States from Vietnam in 1984 and was employed as a shrimpboat fisherman. He and his wife lived with their children and a grandmother in a brick home near Bayou La Batre, a fishing village 20 miles southwest of Mobile, with a large Southeast Asian community.

Presumed dead are: 4-month-old Danny; 1-year-old Lindsey; 2-year-old Hannah; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan, who was raised from infancy by Luong but is not his biological child.

Phengsisomboun, who is from Thailand, said Luong had quickly spent money from an insurance settlement after an automobile accident. He said he initially feared Luong had traded the children for drugs.

Luong was arrested Oct. 10 in Hinesville, Ga., on a charge accusing him of possessing crack. Luong called police and "requested an officer at his residence because he had used narcotics and wanted to turn himself in," according to a report by Officer Jeffrey Liu.

Luong was giving his children a bath when Liu arrived, the report states. He eventually emerged from the bathroom and pulled from a shirt pocket a pipe and "a whitish yellow rock that appeared to be crack cocaine," Liu wrote.

A grand jury has yet to act on the case. Luong advised Hinesville authorities on Nov. 1 that he had moved.

This brings back memories of a shooting I got caught up in in Miami in the mid eighties. Two Cuban guys were ejected from an establishment on Fort Lauderdale strip, I was on the raised patio outside drinking and chattingf up some nice local talent. About ten minutes later a car pulled up outside with guns sticking out the open wiondow and sprayed the place with gunfire, I immdiately went for the ground bringing down the girl I was chatting to. Nobody was killed, we were lucky we were on a raised patio really. There were two interesting outcomes, |I got off with the girl, and the only tow actually injured were two off duty British Soldiers from Northern Ireland. At the time I saw it as a double result! The place was called Penrods! Anyone know if its still there?

Report: Mom says revenge was motive in baby's death
01:08 PM CST on Friday, March 7, 2008
Associated Press
BOGALUSA, La. -- A woman whose 6-week-old baby died after being burned, beaten and drugged says she thinks the motive was revenge, a Bogalusa newspaper reported Friday.

Baby Diana Nelson
Amy Leighanne Thomas, 22, has been arrested in the case.

The child's mother, Lindsey Daigle, 19, told The Daily News that she had told another woman that Thomas had taken something from her work locker. Daigle said she believes Thomas harmed the baby after finding out that Daigle had talked about the alleged theft.

Daigle does not work at the store in question, and did not tell the newspaper how she learned about the alleged theft.

Thomas denied the allegations in an interview with the newspaper. She said she took Diana Nelson to her home and bathed her, but did nothing to hurt the baby.

Sgt. Darrell Darden, spokesman for the Bogalusa Police Department, was out of the office and could not be reached immediately for comment.

The newspaper interviewed both women Tuesday, a day before Thomas was arrested. Police asked the newspaper at the time to delay publication of the report because it might jeopardize the investigation, publisher and editor John Walker said.

Thomas was booked Wednesday with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile; after the baby died on Thursday, police said the charge would be increased to first-degree murder.

Investigators have said the infant was beaten on the head, singed with a curling iron and drugged. Police also have said that Thomas confessed on Wednesday.

Also, just to let everyone here know that I got the story off of www.kelseyspurpose.org from Christy Hershner. She posted the story.

That just makes me sick to my stomach!! I'm sorry. There needs to be harsher punishment for these monsters who commit crimes against children. For instance, there needs to be some type of a law that states that anyone who hurts and kills a child should undergo surgery to have all of their reproductive organs removed so they can not have anymore children whatsoever. As far as the child molesters, they need to have their penises removed!!! Let me do it!!! I'll volunteer!!

This until the new pen gets completed at Torrington in 2010
Here's some lowdown on Wallens Ridge and it's history, although it's written by anti-prison jerks but it gives you a good idea and pics of the institutions. Maybe if the prison guards beat the crap out of him so bad that he dies, we'll finally get our justice.

A 42 year old male was suspected for the abduction, but he denied any involvement in Englas disappearance until last Sunday when he confessed to not only Englas murder but also the murder of Pernilla Hellgren, 31 years old back in 2000.

Englas murder makes it the fourth child that's been murdered in just 19 days here in Sweden.

A frequent customer who was asked to leave a northeast Harris County restaurant after making advances toward a female employee has been charged with murder for fatally shooting the night manager, the Sheriff's Office reported today.

Witnesses told investigators that Michael Hare shot and killed Louis Monroy about 11:20 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Chili's restaurant at 9350 North Sam Houston Parkway East, sheriff's officials said.

Hare, who often came to the restaurant, was aked to leave after a female employee told him that his advances were not welcome, witnesses told officers.

Investigators said Hare left the restaurant, but later approached Monroy and shot him as he walked the woman to her car.

Police said Hare drove away after the shooting, but returned about 20 minutes later and was arrested. Investigators said he had a gun.

Evidently Justice got served in this case.

Mother of slain Edmonton man relieved by death of suspect

The mother of an Edmonton man who was stabbed to death nine years ago said Wednesday that she finally feels she can be at peace now that the man suspected in her son's death has been slain.

"Justice has been served by putting him down,” Giavanna Kostiw said Wednesday. “You know, you live by the sword, you die by it. It's over. I don't have to worry that maybe he'll kill someone else.”

Hung Van Bui was charged with first-degree murder in the 1999 stabbing death of Andrew Allen, 35, but the charge was stayed the next year for lack of evidence.

This week Bui, 27, died in a hail of bullets as he drove his car in Vancouver, a shooting that police describe as a targeted hit.

In June 1999, Kostiw's son worked as a courier with UPS and was making his last delivery of the day to the Ottewell Curling Club in Edmonton when he got into a dispute with another driver. Kostiw said police told her that Bui stabbed her son in the stomach with a kitchen knife.

Bui’s lawyer at the time, Sid Tarrabain, said Wednesday that there was no evidence connecting Bui to the crime.

"The Crown had virtually no case against him. I haven’t seen him in years. I heard from him from time to time, and it’s really unfortunate,” Tarrabain said of Bui's death.

Vancouver police said they believe Bui's death was a drug-related gang hit, and said he was known to them.

In fact, Bui was shot at six times just last month, police said. They have no suspects in the case so far.

Kostiw said she’s relieved Bui’s life is over.

"I hope he burns in the hottest part of hell for all the life he has led, and for all the people that he has hurt," she said.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada after all. :) We don't get murders every week, not that we'd want them at all.

Gang members dead, I'm not going to cry over. Good Riddance.

Charges against Mounds View murder suspect allege he fought with girlfriend before stabbing her and two relatives

By Brady Gervais
bgervais@pioneerpress.com
Article Last Updated: 10/29/2008 11:55:51 PM CDT

The deaths were brutal. His conscience was eating at him.

A criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County on Wednesday offers the first details into the horrific killings of three Mounds View women and a glimpse at what Johnny Lee Ellis Jr. was thinking before his arrest. He grew increasingly agitated before he told an acquaintance Monday that he had stabbed his girlfriend over an argument.

The Ramsey County attorney's office charged him Wednesday with three counts of second-degree murder for his alleged role in the slayings. Ellis, 38, is accused of killing his girlfriend, Angela Vigen; her mother, Jolyn Vigen; and her sister Jennifer Vigen, who neighbors said had Down syndrome.

Jolyn Vigen, 75, suffered 13 stab wounds to the face, neck and shoulder area, the complaint said. Jennifer Vigen, 35, had 22 stab wounds to the face, neck and upper back area. Both bodies were found in a bedroom.

Angela Vigen, 40, whose body was found behind a locked door in the basement, suffered multiple sharp-force injuries to her head and a fracture. A 2-inch portion of a knife was found in her brain. A hammer with apparent blood was found next to her body.

The complaint does not say what the argument between Ellis and Angela Vigen was about.

Police discovered the bodies Monday afternoon. A relative asked police to check on the family at their home at 5108 Sunnyside Road after she was unable to contact anyone there since Oct. 23. Their bodies were beginning to decompose.

Bloody shoeprints were found at the home.

Ellis grew increasingly bothered Monday night at a Minneapolis apartment where he was visiting a friend and his friend's sister. About 5 p.m., when a television report aired about the homicides in Mounds View, Ellis showed his driver's license to the sister, the complaint said. It contained the same address where the homicides occurred.

Ellis told the woman, who is not identified by name in the complaint, to write for him: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it." He said he had stabbed his girlfriend, the complaint said. He also told the woman that Angela Vigen had a mother and that he "couldn't leave a witness."

Later, Minneapolis police were dispatched to the apartment at 3001 Third St. N. after a 911 hang-up call. When a dispatcher called back, the unidentified woman said Ellis was holding a knife to his chest, according to the complaint. Ellis took the phone and told the dispatcher he had committed a crime and wanted to turn himself in to authorities. He also said he "had done something bad in Mounds View."

While police attempted to subdue Ellis, he stabbed himself.

Police found a credit card belonging to Angela Vigen at the apartment, as well as her car in the parking lot.

This happened two doors down from where I live ...

Two women, one man arrested in Cape Coral on murder charges
The charges involve the death of Raymond Pratt, 71, whose body was found in an apartment late Tuesday afternoon.

Carl Edward Smith, 40; (DOB: 10/12/1968) was charged with second degree murder, said police spokeswoman Connie Barron. Jennifer Lee Simundson, 32 and and Tyana Jean Kershaw, 41, were charged with second degree murder accessory after the fact, Barron said.

She said police received a 9-1-1 call at 4:17 p.m. on November 4 from the landlord of an apartment at 5235 Coronado Parkway #2. The landlord had gone to the apartment to make a repair. When no one answered, he entered the apartment and found Pratt laying facedown in a pool of blood, Barron said.

Pratt was an acquaintance of the tenant of the apartment, and he began staying at the apartment a few weeks earlier. Pratt also was an amputee with a prosthetic leg.

Kevin Jerome Powell, 18 - Houston
Post by admin on Feb 19, 2009, 9:26am

Five teenagers, including four high school students, are accused of beating a Baytown teen to death, mistakenly blaming him for breaking the windows of one of their cars, police said.

The five used the lid of a barbecue grill and a pistol when they attacked 18-year-old Kevin Jerome Powell early Monday morning, said Baytown police spokesman Lt. Eric Freed. Investigators would find no evidence that Powell vandalized the damaged car, a 1995 Buick Roadmaster, Freed said.

Arrested later that day and charged with murder were La Porte residents Marcus Jason, 18, a student at Dewalt Alternative School; Joshua Rider, 19; Joshua Ashford, 17, an 11th-grader at La Porte High School who owned the Buick; Charles Merritt, 18, who also attends La Porte High; and Cedrick Fears, 17, a Baytown resident who attends High Point High School.

Powell was visiting a friend at the Autumn Ridge apartment, 501 Massey Tompkins, late Sunday, the same time the five were visiting a friend at the same complex, Freed said. Powell’s body was found at a neighboring complex — Tompkins Green Apartments at 605 Massey Tompkins.

A resident there saw the body about 7 a.m. Monday between a hedge and a parked truck. Police said they believe he was killed hours earlier.

Freed said he didn’t know how the teens crossed paths. He speculated that Powell could have been with a large group, and he could have been chased.

“That’s the big question,” Freed said.

Commotion in progress
Officers had been dispatched to the Autumn Ridge complex around midnight Sunday for a disturbance, where they found the severely damaged Buick.

Police were dispatched again at 12:45 a.m. for shots being fired. One minute later, another call was reported — an assault in progress.

Residents of the Tompkins Green Apartments said they reported hearing a commotion early Sunday morning and saw a man being chased by a group of men, one of whom was carrying a pistol.

When police arrived, Freed said, they detained a group of young men running from the complex. One of those detained, Freed said, owned the Buick and told authorities that the group heard a commotion and then found the vehicle damaged. The teens were subsequently released.

After Powell’s body was discovered, the teens were brought in for questioning. Freed said each of the five gave statements to police, saying they took turns assaulting Powell.

The five are in the Harris County Jail, with bail set at $100,000 each. If convicted, each faces five years to life in prison for the first-degree felony. None had an attorney of record late Wednesday.

Renee Mullin, 35 & Brenda Alderman, 58 - Lufkin

Three people are dead near Lufkin after an apparent double murder-suicide.

Investigators believe 45-year-old Rickey Mullin, of Lufkin, shot and killed his estranged wife and her mother before turning the gun on himself. Authorities found the bodies of 35-year-old Margaret Renee Mullin and her mother, 58-year-old Brenda Sue Mayo Alderman in a van and Rickey Mullin’s body in the yard of his home just outside Lufkin Saturday morning. The women lived in Nacogdoches.

Renee Mullin had filed for divorce in November.

Angelina County Sheriff’s investigator David Rodriguez says the women came over to the residence and “something went horribly wrong,” The Lufkin Daily News reported in its online edition Sunday.

Rodriguez says there were reports of shots being fired into a van. He says the cab of the van was destroyed.

Autopsies have been ordered.

THE PINA CASE
Victim’s dad: ‘It’s my baby girl’

Houston Chronicle
Feb. 24, 2009, 7:47AM

COMING TOGETHER: Edward Pina, in striped shirt, is comforted by loved ones before a vigil for his wife, Sabrina, at Christ the Good Shepherd Church on Monday, the day her remains were identified.

When Sabrina Pina’s family learned Monday that a body found in a northwest Harris County ditch had been identified as hers, the woman’s father sent out a heartbreaking text message to close friends.

“It’s my baby girl,” Rolando Tolentino of Spring wrote in the message, which was sent to friends’ cell phones at 2:23 p.m.

Sheriff’s homicide investigators and Harris County medical examiner’s officials have not yet released how Pina, 27, was killed, but her death has been ruled a homicide. It was not clear Monday night if her family had been told how she died.

Pina is believed to have been abducted Saturday afternoon after going to a Kohl’s department store at Texas 249 and Spring Cypress. The Tomball woman’s truck was later found in the store’s parking lot with purchases she made earlier that day still in her vehicle, friends said.

Pina’s clothed body was found about 7 a.m. Sunday in a ditch at Jack Road and Warren Ranch Road, a rural area near Hockley about 23 miles from the store.

Nearly 250 people gathered Monday evening at a vigil at Christ the Good Shepherd, Pina’s childhood church, to remember a woman described as bright, loving and kind. As the service began, a woman’s sobs echoed through the sanctuary. Pina’s husband, Edward, sat in the front row between his wife’s parents and his own mother. He bowed his head and clutched the front of the pew with both hands as he wept quietly.

The scent of incense filled the room as prayers were read and hymns were sung. Tears rolled down somber faces in the crowd. Pina’s father spoke to the crowd toward the end of the service.

“Our hearts are ripped open and we can barely breathe,” he said as his voice cracked. “With every text message I receive every 15 seconds and phone call every three minutes and with every hug, you are stitching back our hearts.”

Law enforcement officials said it is too soon to say whether Pina’s abduction is connected to the Feb. 2 kidnapping of Susana de Jesus, a 37-year-old Houston woman taken at gunpoint from a Pearland shopping center, also located in a suburban area near a major freeway. De Jesus has never been found.

Brazoria County sheriff’s detectives who are investigating De Jesus’ disappearance have been in touch with the Harris County sheriff’s homicide investigators working Pina’s case. There was not enough information to compare the crimes Monday, but both agencies will discuss the two cases in the future, said Brazoria County sheriff’s Capt. Chris Kincheloe.

Pina was running errands Saturday when she called her husband from Home Depot around noon to ask what kind of garbage disposal to buy. She was last seen at a Sonic at 1:30 p.m., where she was captured on video by a surveillance camera, said Jeffrey Armenta, a close friend of Pina’s. She is believed to have vanished between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Her vehicle was found at the Kohl’s store parking lot at 22529 Tomball Parkway, also known as Texas 249.

Harris County sheriff’s homicide investigators did not respond to repeated requests for information on the case Monday. Pina’s friends pleaded with anyone who saw anything suspicious to call homicide detectives at 713-967-5810 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

“She was funny, she was powerful. She’s very much missed,” said Jeffrey Armenta’s wife, Tatiana Armenta, who described herself at Pina’s best friend.

The two women graduated together from Klein High School in 2000. “We were actually dreading that we were old enough to be going to our 10-year (high school) reunion,” Armenta said.

Pina went on to graduate from the University of Texas and was working for TXU Energy’s marketing department at the time of her disappearance. She and her husband married in October 2006. They have no children.

Customers outside the Kohl’s store where Pina’s truck was found said Monday that they are frightened by the disappearances of two women from suburban shopping centers in the same month.

“I’m very scared,” said Ana Cabrera, 56, who lives in the Spring Cypress area. “I see it as a similar case.”

“I always walk outside with my keys ready, and I pay attention,” Bauman said. “I’m always paranoid ... It could happen to any one of us.”

Sabrina Pina: The 27-year-old was remembered by friends for her “lovely smile.”

Authorities this morning charged a 27-year-old man with capital murder in the slaying of Sabrina Pina, whose body was found in a northwest Harris County ditch on Sunday after she disappeared from a shopping center.

Theodore Charles Schmidt was ordered held in the County Jail without bail after being charged with killing Pina, 27.

The charge came after Harris County sheriff’s deputies spent hours questioning the man.

“This is not a stranger case — they’d known each other for years,” said Lt. Rolf Nelson of the sheriff’s Homicide Division.

He did not elaborate on their relationship.

Schmidt was taken into custody about 7 p.m. at the Carrington Place Apartments in northwest Houston and gave investigators a statement about the slaying, Nelson added.

A close friend and co-worker of Pina's, Tatiana Armenta, said this morning that she was relieved to learn of the arrest.

But, she added, "I don't know what to think."

Armenta said she vaguely recalls Schmidt's name, but does not remember where she heard it. She said she doesn't remember Pina ever mentioning it.

"I don't know who he is. I haven't heard anything about him," Armenta said.

She had not yet spoken with Pina's family about the arrest.

"They're having a very tough day," she said.

Pina was found shot to death Sunday morning. She was last seen alive Saturday afternoon outside a Kohl’s department store at Texas 249 and Spring Cypress, about 23 miles away. Investigators said they think she was abducted there.

Detectives examined surveillance video for clues, but homicide Sgt. Wayne Kuhlman would not say whether the store’s surveillance equipment captured anything suspicious.

“We have her (Pina) on surveillance camera, but I don’t want to go into any more detail,” Kuhlman said.

He also said Pina’s purse has not been recovered. Detectives are checking her cell phone records to see if a call was placed after her disappearance. There is no evidence that her bank or credit cards have been used since Saturday, officials said.

After meeting her husband at a Starbucks about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Pina spent several hours shopping at stores along the 22500 to 28000 block of Texas 249. Her last stop was at the Kohl’s store, detectives said.

“We’re confident that around 2 p.m., something happened out there in that Kohl’s parking lot,”’ Kuhlman said.

Pina’s clothed body was found about 7 a.m. Sunday in a ditch along Jack Road near Warren Ranch Road.

Online tributes
While investigators worked to press charges on the suspect, Pina’s family and friends made plans for her memorial services.

Many left online tributes to her, recalling Pina’s “enthusiasm” and “lovely smile.”

Tatiana Armenta, Pina’s good friend and co-worker at TXU Energy’s marketing department, said Pina joked about pulling down the wall that separated their desks in one of their final conversations.

“Just so we could work in the same cubicle together,” Armenta said.

Police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old who was shot and killed in a north Houston apartment complex Saturday night.

Officers arrived at the Coppertree Apartments, 1415 W. Gulf Bank, around 7:30 p.m. and found paramedics treating the teen, who appeared to have one gunshot wound, said Houston Police Department Sgt. C. Howard.

The teen was shot in a different part of the large apartment complex, but ran before collapsing where he died, Howard said.

At this time, details and the motive of the shooting are still unclear. The teen, identified by family members as James Troy Barnes Jr., did not live in the apartment complex and had come there with two friends for a child's birthday party, said his mother, Kathy Singleton, who rushed to the scene after learning of the shooting.

"I held him 'til he took his last breath," she said. "Until he went cold."

Another round of shell casing was found in a different part of the apartment complex, but investigators do not believe they are related to the teen's shooting.

"It's not uncommon to find shell casings in this area," Howard said.

Singleton fears the apartment complex is a high-crime area and would like to see it shut down.

"I don't want to see another mother cry," she said.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to call the HPD homicide division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

MAN DIES AT HOSPITAL: Woman Shot, Killed By Troopers After Allegedly Shooting Ex-Husband

By KENNETH DEAN
Staff Writer

YANTIS — Authorities say a woman shot her ex-husband at his place of employment in front of a witness Friday morning before returning home.

Several minutes later, she was shot to death by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers after she reportedly aimed her weapon at them. It is not clear whether the woman fired on troopers, but officials say they acted appropriately.

Ms. Kimberly McLarry was pronounced dead at the scene and her ex-husband was flown to East Texas Medical Center, where he died later Friday.

The ordeal began when Hopkins County Sheriff’s dispatchers received a 911 about 10:15 a.m. call in reference to a man being shot in the head at a mechanic’s garage about three miles north of Yantis.

After shooting Robert Alan McLarry, the 48-year-old Kimberly McLarry returned to her home on County Road 1858 in Wood County where she faced off with troopers, authorities said.

“We had troopers in the area when the initial call in Hopkins County came in, and they responded to that scene,” DPS Spokesperson Jean Dark said at the scene.

Dark said when troopers went to the woman’s home, she approached a fence on her property and brandished a weapon.

“They told her to drop the weapon but she pointed it at the troopers, and they fired,” she said.

Dark said Texas Rangers, along with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating the shooting and that a helicopter was brought in to assist investigators in mapping the shooting.

She said there were a total of six shots fired, but she said it was unclear if the woman fired at troopers or not.

“That is all under investigation at this point, so we don’t know who fired, but she had just shot someone in the head and then pointed her weapon at troopers. They felt threatened,” she said.

Wood County records indicate the couple divorced in 2006.

Dark said there was no information Friday about why she would open fire on her ex-husband.

“We just don’t have that information at this point, so anything we could say would only be speculation,” she said.

Capital murder suspect arrested in shooting on Old Tyler Road

Updated: June 29, 2009 12:04 PM CDT

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Friends and family are mourning the death of a former SFA football player shot multiple times during an apparent robbery attempt Saturday morning. 24 year old Michael Mott wore number 38 for SFA when he played four years ago, however, he is being remembered for his being just as impressive off the football field.

The Nacogdoches Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred just before 2 o'clock this morning in front of Harlan's Bar-Be-Que on Old Tyler Road.

20-year old Nickevete Rhonshondo Carey of Nacogdoches was arrested by authorities in Center five hours later. He's charged with shooting to death 24 year old Michael Mott of Nacogdoches. NPD officers found Mott on Old Tyler Road suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital where he died a short time after arrival.

The preliminary investigation into the shooting has indicated robbery as a possible motive. Mr. Mott was not employed at Harlon's.

The suspect was seen fleeing as a passenger in a vehicle. Shortly after the call came in, a Nacogdoches Police patrol observed the vehicle northbound out Old Tyler Road. The vehicle was stopped near Hurst Drive, outside Loop 224, where the suspect fled on foot.

Nickevette Rhonshondo Carey of Nacogdoches was arrested by Shelby County authorities in Center, Texas on June 27, 2009 shortly after 7:00 a.m. and NPD detectives transported him back to Nacogdoches.

East Texas News has learned that the shooting victim was a former Stephen F. Austin State University football player who played for the Lumberjacks in 2004-2005.

16-year-old dies after being shot in face in Maryvale
by Jahna Berry - Jul. 3, 2009 10:20 AM
The Arizona Republic
A 16-year-old boy died after he was shot in the face at a Maryvale townhouse complex early Wednesday morning.

The Phoenix Police Department has not released the victim's name because his relatives have not been notified, Lt. Cheryl Gipson-Thurman said.

A maintenance man found the teen just before 6 a.m. near a tool shed at 67th Avenue and Indian School Road, and then called police.
Police are looking for two suspects in the shooting. One is a 30-year-old Hispanic man with a shaved head, about 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 8 in height and weighs 160 to 170 pounds. The other man is described as 25 years old, Hispanic, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds with short dark hair.

Gipson-Thurman said officers had been to the same neighborhood twice that morning - once for a report of gunshots and later for a call about a fight. She said it's unclear whether those incidents were related to the shooting.

When police investigated the report of gunshots in the area, they didn't find anything, the lieutenant said. Officers responding to the second call found a man who said he had been in a fight with three other men.

He was taken to the hospital, Gipson-Thurman said.

5 Found Dead in a Sydney Home

Source: Sydney Morning Herald
http://www.smh.com.au/national/sydney-fa....90720-dprw.html

The grisly deaths of five family members in northern Sydney over the weekend were targeted and "extremely personal" murders, police say.

Police say the family - reportedly Chinese-born Min Lin, 45, his wife Yun Li Lin, 43, two sons, Henry aged 12 and Terry nine, and Mrs Lin's 39-year-old sister Yun Bin Yin - were killed some time between midnight and 9am (AEST) on Saturday.

Police hope post-mortem examinations and continued forensic investigation of the Lin's Boundary Road home will shed more light on how and why the horrific attacks occurred.

But Superintendent Geoff Beresford said it appeared the Lins had been targeted and could have known their attackers.

"It appears to be an extremely personal type of attack given the level of violence but ... we're open-minded, we can't make any particular prediction this early in the inquiry," Detective Superintendent Beresford told Sky News.

"I'm satisfied that it's not random given the house location, it's somewhat hidden from the street being a battle-axe [shaped] block, but I'm more concerned with the injuries to the people themselves that leads us to think that it is targeted."

Man slays estranged girlfriend before killing himself, cops say
By Lien Hoang and John Brewer
Pioneer Press
Updated: 07/30/2009 05:00:45 PM CDT

A woman trying to end her 25-year relationship with a Wyoming man was shot and killed this morning by the man, who last week was making suicidal statements, according to law enforcement. The man then shot himself.

Erica Ann Wilson, 38, had just last Thursday moved out of the home she shared with James Harold Schwartzbauer, 46, in an attempt to end their relationship, said Lt. Paul Sommer of the Anoka County sheriff's office.

Witnesses saw the couple arguing outside of Wilson's new apartment building at 33 Village Parkway in Circle Pines at about 7:50 a.m. this morning just prior to hearing gunshots.

The sheriff's office believes Schwartzbauer shot Wilson and then killed himself.

The couple had been together for 25 years
Erica Ann Wilson but never married, the sheriff's office said. They have three adult children.

There was no history of domestic calls to the home, Sommer said, but the children said their parents' relationship "was not tranquil."

"There was a lot of arguing," Sommer said.

Last Friday, Wyoming police signed Schwartzbauer into Regions Hospital in St. Paul because he had been making suicidal statements. Sommer said he was distraught about Wilson moving out the day before.

The couple's children helped the Wyoming police department remove "several" guns from the man's Wyoming home .

Schwartzbauer was released Saturday morning without being admitted.

The sheriff's office is still investigating where the man obtained the handgun used in the shooting.

Neighbors first heard the couple arguing around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

"I assume one left last night and came back this morning because one was yelling at the other to pack their bags and leave," Jillissa Levercom, 31, said. "She wanted to stay away from him, he's been antagonizing her."

Levercom's daughter Micaiah Summer, 14, said Wilson had been trying to get away from Schwartzbauer for the past year.

Anthony Apikelis, 20, said he talked to the man who witnessed the fighting this morning and called police. He didn't get the man's name, but said he was parked next to Schwartzbauer shortly before the confrontation.

"(Schwartzbauer) was sitting in his car with the door open and one foot out," Apikelis said he was told. "It was pretty sketchy. He was clearly waiting for her."

Wilson then walked into the parking lot, where Schwartzbauer grabbed hold of her, Apikelis said.

"He threw her up against a car with a gun to her head," Apikelis said. "Then the neighbors started shouting, 'Hey, he's assaulting her,' so he dragged her into a tunnel."

Before pulling Wilson into the tunnel that runs through the apartment, Schwartzbauer slapped her once, maybe twice, neighbors said.

Some heard two gunshots inside the tunnel, and possibly a third that came three seconds later.

"I'm guessing he shot her twice and then shot himself," Summer said.

Levercom and Summer saw the bodies before police covered the tunnel with a blue tarp.

"There was just a trail of blood coming from (Schwartzbauer's) body," Levercom said.

Apikelis had a better look at Wilson, whose face was half covered in blood, he said.

Witnesses said a glass door had been shattered nearby.

A truck towed away the couple's vehicles, a green-blue Grand Prix and blue Volkswagen, they said.

Sam McGowan, Surrey, British Columbia

Surrey stabbing victim Sam McGowan was just trying to protect his family when he was brutally killed Wednesday night by strangers, his distraught girlfriend said.

http://www.vancouversun.com/dies+protecting+children+family/1869296/story.html

And crap from the other side.

The 14-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing Surrey dad Sam McGowan only recently began carrying a knife to protect himself in a rough neighbourhood rife with drug use and violent racial tensions between teens, said a younger friend who was with him on the night of the murder. (yeah, yeah, tell me another story)

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Stabbing+accused+friend+says/1871741/story.html

Maybe the 13 year old should be charged as an accessory to the fact. Maybe that may open his eyes that his "great 14 year old buddy" is a murdering scumbag.

Man, girl charged in killing of girl's mom
Both charged with first-degree murder, Bastrop officials say.

By Patrick George
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Wednesday, August 19, 2009

BASTROP — An 18-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl are accused of killing the girl's mother after the mother's complaints prompted Bastrop County officials to charge him with having a sexual relationship with the girl.

Joseph Dewayne Douglas was charged Monday with murdering Tracy Lynn Bellard at her McDade home while her daughter watched.

Bellard had previously filed a complaint with police saying Douglas had established a relationship with her underage daughter. He was subsequently charged with indecency with a child, harboring a runaway and criminal trespass and was released on bail. Officials did not say Tuesday when those charges were filed.

Bellard's sister told investigators Friday that the 42-year-old hadn't come to work at their family-owned restaurant, Mimi G's Steakhouse in Bastrop. Bellard's relatives declined to comment when reached by phone Tuesday evening.

On Monday afternoon, officers searched the five-acre property in the Smithville area where Douglas lived with his grandparents and found Bellard's car and what they thought to be Bellard's charred remains near a brush pile, Bastrop County Sheriff Terry Pickering said Tuesday.

The remains have been taken to the Travis County medical examiner's office for positive identification.

Douglas and the 14-year-old were in a romantic relationship, Pickering said, but detectives do not know the motive behind the killing.

"We don't have any idea at this point," Pickering said. "We're still trying to put the pieces together."

Douglas and the 14-year-old, who is not being named because of her age, were arrested on first-degree murder charges at his home Monday, Pickering said.

Douglas did not make a statement to detectives; his bail has been set at $500,000. Officials said the girl is in custody in Seguin.

Douglas' arrest affidavit states that his 13-year-old brother brought a .22-caliber rifle to Douglas at Bellard's home. Police did not say where the boy got the gun. The 13-year-old told police he saw Douglas shoot and kill Bellard in the presence of Bellard's daughter, the affidavit states.

The girl told investigators that she was present when Douglas shot her mother, the affidavit said. She said Douglas left her home in her mother's car. She said Douglas told her later that he had disposed of the body, the affidavit states.

Because she is a juvenile, investigators would not disclose the details of the 14-year-old's involvement or why she too was charged with murder.

"We have reason to believe she was a participant," Pickering said.

Hi,

I'm not US citizen nor living in USA. I'm portuguese and I live in Portugal. The death penalty is a completly wrong answer from country to criminals. I think family victim's may think in revenge using death penalty but it will bring back anything. A democratic country should not even have life without a parole. In Portugal no one can be in jail for more than 25 years. Our criminal rates are low. USA have a culture of violence and guns this is your issue. Believe any country with a lots of guns and culture of violence have a high criminal tax.

No to vendettas No to death penalty. No guns.

Lets induce culture of peace and put away dangerous people.

Any comments ?

Police mum on cause of death of 7-year-old Florida girl, Somer Thompson

Somer Thompson, who went missing earlier this week, was found dead in a Georgia landfill.

Police in Florida are keeping quiet on what exactly killed 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who found dead in a Georgia landfill.

"We know the cause of death," said a spokesperson with the Clay County Sheriff's office. "We want to preserve the integrity of this investigation and are not releasing any information that in the long run would prevent us from prosecuting and convicting the person who did this to Somer [Thompson]."

Somer, who disappeared while walking the mile home from school on October 19th, was discovered dead days later.

The body was found late Wednesday, and local authorities confirmed it was the missing girl the following day.

Police tracked garbage trucks that took trash from the neighborhood in which she lived in Orange Park, to the landfill in Folkston, Georgia, according to authorities.

Angry that her sister told her to stop arguing with a playmate, Somer ran ahead of the group and was never seen again. Her disappearance triggered a countywide search involving helicopters, dogs and volunteers walking arm-to-arm through wooded areas.

Before the grim discovery, Somer's father, Sam Thompson, of Graham, N.C., pleaded for her safe return.

"Somer, your daddy Sam loves you unconditionally. Stay strong and don't give up the fight or the hope that we're going to be a family again. I love you," he said.

Police have questioned more than 70 registered sex offenders in the area. Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show 161 offenders live in a 5-mile radius of Somer's home.

Elizabeth Olten Body Found, Juvenile in Custody

The body of missing 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten was found Friday in woods off of Route D in St. Martins, Missouri. Cole County Sheriff Greg White said a juvenile is in custody and is a “person of interest” in Olten’s death.
Police have not released details on the person of interest, except to say the individual lived in the area, was acquainted with Elizabeth and was older than her.
Elizabeth was last seen around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday leaving a friend’s house. No other details were available.
Elizabeth’s disappearance and death came just after a 7-year-old Florida girl was abducted and murdered while walking home from school in Orange Park, Florida. Somer Thompson went missing Monday and was found dead Thursday at a Georgia landfill.
